Job Description

Police Officer The City of Johnson City invites you to apply to start your career as a Johnson City Police Officer. The Johnson City Police Department, located in the 8th largest city in Tennessee, is home to approximately 180 sworn and civilian employees who are dedicated to protecting the community. Anyone interested in working for the City of Johnson City Police Department, must meet the minimum requirements for the position and pass the testing process. The information provided will remain on file for a period of one year. Minimum Requirements U.S. Citizen Be a high school graduate or have GED equivalent Be at least 21 years of age Meet standards set forth by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission and adopted by the Tennessee General Assembly on June 4, 1983, T.C.A. 38-8-106. Not have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendre to a felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws, or any city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances. If applicable, separated honorably (or under honorable conditions) from the Armed Services. The Hiring Process Includes Application for Employment Background Investigation Polygraph Physical Agility Test Police Officer Examination Assessment Center (Panel Interview) Conditional Offer/New Hire Testing Training (all training provided by the agency) Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy 9 Weeks Field Training 16 Weeks Probationary Period 1 Year As a Police Officer, you will be paid full salary while receiving comprehensive training through the Tennessee Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy. Upon completion of the recruit training, you will be responsible for protective services work as well as the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes. This work may involve personal risk and requires sound, independent judgment in all situations. All uniforms and equipment are provided by the department. In addition, you will be issued a take home patrol car. Incentive /Sign-on Bonus Applicants already certified will be eligible for the following incentives if hired: Tennessee POST Certification $5,000 incentive Other state POST Certification (requires transition school) $2,500 incentive
Recruitment and Retention Grant Eligibility:
Experienced Officer
  • Category 1 If Previously POST certified in Tennessee
  • Must Be out of law enforcement 1-7 year(s) If previously POST certified from out of state
  • No break in service required Eligible at 6-months ($1,000), 12-months ($3,000), 24-months ($3,000), 36-months ($3,000) No Previous Certified Experience
  • Category 2 If no prior POST certified law enforcement experience Eligible at 12-months ($3,000), 24-months ($2,500), 36-months ($2,500) Documented evidence of the training level must be provided and is subject to verification by the Human Resources department.
All certifications must be issued by or approved by the State of Tennessee.
