Job Description
This position serves as the department's Crime Victim Advocate by assisting victims, coordinating available services, and ensuring compliance with victims' rights laws and regulations. Reviews reports to identify crime victims and ensure they receive required information on rights and available services. Assists victims and families with completion of Crime Victims' Compensation forms and provides referrals to service agencies or emergency shelters. Maintains regular communication with victims regarding case status, suspensions, or referrals to the District Attorney's Office. Serves as a liaison between the Police Department, Attorney General's Office, and local victim-services organizations. Provides crisis-intervention referrals and coordinates Magistrate's Emergency Protective Order notifications when required. Maintains knowledge of victim-service programs and available resources. Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety policies and procedures. Informs supervisor of all work activities. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Must complete formal Crime Victim Advocate / Liaison training through the Texas Attorney General's Office within sixty (60) days of employment. Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license and driving record must comply with Town policy. Physical Abilities The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.• Work involves light to moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Must be able to read, write, talk, hear, and operate computer and office equipment for extended periods. Requires visual acuity sufficient for close work, color recognition, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Desired Qualifications Crime Victim Advocate / Liaison experience preferred. Experience in a law-enforcement environment preferred. Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills. Knowledge of social work practices. Knowledge of caseload management principles and practices. Knowledge of victim's rights and advocacy techniques. Knowledge of criminal and civil law, investigative procedures, and law-enforcement reporting systems. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare professional reports, presentations, and correspondence. Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Strong organizational skills, able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive or investigative information. Skill in conflict and crisis management. Skill in applying independent judgment, personal discretion, and resourcefulness in interpreting and applying guidelines. Skill in reading, interpreting, applying, and explaining laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
