Law Enforcement Telecommunicators serve as a critical link between the public and first responders by answering emergency 911 and administrative calls, assessing the nature and urgency of incidents, and dispatching law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other emergency personnel accordingly. In addition to dispatching for the Tom Green County Sheriffs Office, Telecommunicators are also responsible for dispatching law enforcement units and volunteer fire department personnel for Coke County, providing life-saving services across county lines. Telecommunicators must exhibit strong multi-tasking skills, professionalism, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Exercise sound judgment and prioritize emergency assistance to protect the safety of law enforcement personnel, first responders, and the public. Answer multi-line telephones, including emergency 911 lines and non-emergency administrative calls. Identify and assess the nature, severity, and location of incidents; reassure callers and gather all necessary information for emergency response. Dispatch appropriate personnel, including law enforcement, fire, and EMS resources, utilizing Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), enhanced 911 equipment, and other communications equipment. Provide full dispatching services for Coke County Deputies and Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) personnel, ensuring coordinated and timely responses to incidents in Coke County. Maintain full compliance with regulations set forth by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), including participation in DPS Compliance Audits. Enter, maintain, and modify records for warrants, missing persons, stolen property, emergency protective orders, and other sensitive law enforcement data in local and national databases. Operate the Texas/National Crime Information Center (TCIC/NCIC) to request and disseminate vehicle registration, drivers license, and criminal history records. Respond to requests for warrant confirmations via the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (TLETS). Provide accurate information and assistance to residents, visitors, and outside agencies, including relaying messages and referring inquiries to appropriate divisions. Maintain accurate division logs, including wrecker rotations, abandoned vehicles, routine patrol activities, and livestock ownership. Perform specialized clerical duties, including preparation, maintenance, and release of official law enforcement records and reports. Monitor security camera systems for the Tom Green County Sheriffs Office facility. May serve as a Field Training Officer (FTO) for new Telecommunicators. Perform other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the Sheriffs Office.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Ability to remain composed in high-stress and emotionally charged situations. Strong multitasking skills with the capacity to process multiple simultaneous communications and tasks. Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and effectively over the phone and radio. Proficient in operating specialized computer software systems, CAD systems, two-way radios, and law enforcement databases. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written and verbal instructions; strong spelling, grammar, and report-writing skills. Capable of working both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, high-demand environment. Must meet or exceed required proficiency levels on job-related testing, including typing, data entry, call summarization, map reading, memory recall, and other assessments as required by the agency.
Work Schedule and Conditions:
Operates in a 24/7, 365-day-per-year environment with rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime during emergencies or staffing shortages. Work is performed in a confined, climate-controlled setting with extended periods of sitting. Requires visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity; occasional lifting up to 15 lbs.; potential exposure to stressful and emotionally difficult calls.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age. High School Diploma or GED required. U.S. Citizenship required. Must successfully pass a background investigation, including criminal history and employment verification. No felony convictions, nor Class A or Class B misdemeanor convictions within the past 10 years. Military discharge, if applicable, must not be classified as Dishonorable or Bad Conduct. Must successfully complete a medical physical and psychological evaluation.
Certificates and Licenses:
Must obtain TLETS and
TCIC/NCIC
Terminal Operator certification within six (6) months of employment. Must obtain Basic Telecommunicator Proficiency Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within twelve (12) months of employment.
