Job Description

Applications are now being accepted for the School Resource Officer (SRO) position in the City of Fairfax Police Department from applicants who are currently Virginia Certified Police Officers with law enforcement experience. Applicants must provide a portfolio of their training and skills, showing an ability to successfully investigate both administrative discipline incidents and criminal cases within an educational setting. Highly Qualified candidate(s) will be given an oral interview, a conditional job offer, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a physical examination and a psychological examination. After successful completion of the process, a final interview with the Chief of Police will be scheduled. Bilingual individuals are encouraged to apply. Assigned to the Community Services Division. Performs both general duty police work and school related safety and security work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances of the City and Commonwealth of Virginia. Patrols a designated area of the City or an assigned school facility to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic, to enforce motor vehicle operation laws, and conduct criminal investigations. Maintains records and prepares reports. Assist the Patrol Division when needed and perform all other duties as assigned. Virginia Certified Police Officer with a High School diploma or equivalent. Eyesight must meet a minimum of 20/20 binocular vision. Corrective glasses may be worn. Uncorrected vision with glasses must be no worse than 20/100 in either eye. Corrective soft contact lenses may be worn. Uncorrected vision with soft contacts must be no worse than 20/200. Must demonstrate successful long-term wear of lenses of 6 months minimum for pre-employment examination. U.S. Citizenship required at time of application. No felony convictions or domestic assault convictions. Must be of good character and reputation, have favorable credit record, have the ability to speak clearly, hear, analyze and react swiftly to high stress situations dealing with citizens. Successful completion of the applicant screening process. Although individuals with minimum qualifications may apply, those with the highest levels of job-related experience, education and qualifications will receive favorable consideration. •Confinement, Civil Process and Court Security duties will not be considered as law enforcement experience. •
Prefer:
School resource officer experience and/or experience working with or coaching youth. College coursework or a degree in criminal justice or related field; ability to communicate effectively in a second language. Certified as an instructor in Field Training, EVOC, Defensive Tactics, or any other law enforcement discipline. Assigned work schedule is a Monday-Friday shift lasting between 8-9 hours with no working hours, except for a few exceptions, on holidays and the spring, summer and winter breaks.
