Hourly Position Summary:
Police Officers are generalists responsible for a wide range of tasks associated with police service, including but not limited to the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the investigation of crimes and other incidents of public concern, the protection of life, property, civil rights, and public order and other services which contribute to the individual and collective safety and welfare of citizens. Police Officers have the duty to be knowledgeable in the law and legal procedures; departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations; the skills, techniques and practices necessary to successfully discharge their responsibilities. They are expected to be diligent and aggressive in the performance of duties and responsibilities consistent with department policies and priorities and to be mindful of departmental goals and objectives. Police Officers receive general supervision and from time to time receive direction as to specific duties and responsibilities from a supervisor. Their work is subject to review by ranking officers. Police Officers must obey lawful orders issued by appropriate authority.
Essential Functions:
Perform all lawful assignments as prescribed by the Chief of Police or his/her designee and perform miscellaneous services as required by state law, city ordinance, and department policy. Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. Communicate effectively while gathering information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants. Effectively communicate with people by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, solving problems, and advising of rights and processes. Assist in resolution of conflicts and disputes. Provide information to citizens or other assistance as appropriate. Identify and report to the proper authority situations affecting the safety and welfare of the community. Demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings. Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents such as citations, affidavits, and warrants. Make initial and follow up investigations for reported crimes or other incidents warranting investigation. Make lawful arrests and participate in the prosecution of offenders by providing evidence supporting conviction. Operate department computers. Dictate, type, and write investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations. Prepare reports and otherwise document activity as required by department policy and procedure. Problem solving, in partnership with the community.
Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Sixty (60) college credits from an accredited institution of higher learning with a minimum of a "C" average within 5 years of employment. Associate's Degree preferred, Bachelor's Degree or greater in Criminal Justice or related field highly preferred. Any additional requirements as established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board or Middleton Police Commission. United States Citizenship at time of the application. Eighteen (18) years of Age at time of application. No felony or domestic violence convictions for which you have not been granted an absolute and unconditional pardon.
