Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) is hiring for a Trooper III, Explosives detection K-9 handler for Troop O. This sworn officer position is essential to keep the peace and provide public safety in the State of Wyoming. This officer enforces the law, responds to calls for service, provides assistance to motorists and fellow law enforcement officers, and investigates crashes as a Trooper position, along with the additional K-9 roles and responsibilities in addition to any explosives detection duties. As a K-9 officer in the agency, this position is an integral part of our explosives detection program and dignitary section. This position provides leadership and expertise to fellow officers throughout the state, which allows us to accomplish our agency's mission, goals, and objectives. The K-9 Handler is considered a seasoned officer with specialized areas of expertise that require considerable additional training

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

REQUIREMENTS
The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) is hiring for a Trooper III, K9 Handler. This sworn officer position is essential to keep the peace and provide public safety in the State of Wyoming. This officer enforces the law, responds to calls for service, provides assistance to motorists and fellow law enforcement officers, and investigates crashes as a Trooper position, along with the additional K-9 roles and responsibilities. KNOWLEDGE
Healthy physical fitness and nutrition habits. Knowledge of State Statutes, some Commercial Vehicle Rules and Regulations, W.H.P. Operational Policies and Memoranda, Rules of Criminal Procedure, Rules of Arrest, Use of Force, Wyoming Highway System, local court decisions, state court decisions, Supreme Court decisions, Search and Seizure laws, Rules of Evidence, Explosive Devices, Street Gang Activity, Extremist Groups Knowledge and skills in Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms Proficiency to Patrol Specifications, Proper use of Standard Patrol Issued Equipment (RADAR, Camera, Radio, etc.), Custody and Control, Crash Investigations, Basic Emergency Care, Dealing with the Mentally Ill, Crime Scene Management, Photography, Media Relations, Officer Survival, Crisis Management, Conduct Building Searches Skills in interpersonal communications (written & verbal); communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to comprehend new information and apply that which has been learned on the job. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge and skills related to additional full-time duties. Ability to make sound and independent decisions, react decisively and quickly, assert self when necessary to exert control over others, maintain composure and perform effectively in stressful situations. Must be reliable, thorough, punctual, and accurate. Demonstrate a history of personal and professional honesty and integrity. Ability to accept advice and constructive criticism. Ability to conduct crash investigations. Knowledge of, skill, and ability to administer first aid. Ability to identify, interpret, and control dangerous situations; apprehend uncooperative individuals; appropriately apply the use of force. Work under adverse weather environments & adapt to changes in working condition Knowledge of Explosive Devices Knowledge of Street Gang Activity Knowledge of Extremist Groups
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School Diploma /GED/ or equivalent
Experience:
6 years of work experience working with the public, which includes 3 years as a P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement officer or as a Trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Applicant must possess the Professional P.O.S.T. certification through the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission or equivalent certification through another state.
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to work irregular or extended hours with an ever-changing schedule. Typical schedules include overtime, nights, holidays, and weekends on a regular basis. Ability to walk, stand, or sit for long periods. Physically able to respond to and mitigate potentially life-threatening situations. Ability to work in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment. Physically able to safeguard individuals from all forms of security and safety hazards. Ability to drive and transport individuals in a safe, professional, and efficient manner; potentially for long periods. Work in environments and under conditions that require carrying authorized weapons and ammunition, and the use of protective gear and devices.
