Associate Attorney

We are a four-attorney law firm seeking to replace a departing attorney. About Our Firm We practice employee-side employment litigation with a focus on wrongful discharge and wage-and-hour claims. We also handle various other employment claims, including workers' compensation, failure to hire, sexual harassment, etc. Our attorneys are licensed in Missouri and Kansas and regularly practice in state and federal courts on both sides of the state line. Our firm offers meaningful assignments from day one. New attorneys are allowed to take on substantial litigation tasks after minimal training/shadowing, but are not pressured to take on assignments outside of their comfort level. As associates become more comfortable with our practice and procedures, they are given progressively greater responsibility and increased opportunities to handle substantive litigation work, including depositions, hearings, written discovery, motion practice, client interaction, and court appearances. We are located in downtown Kansas City, Kansas — walking distance from the Wyandotte County Courthouse and District of Kansas Courthouse — and a short drive to the Jackson County, Kansas City Courthouse and Western District of Missouri. Position This position will deal with primarily employment law claims, though some workers' compensation work will be included (roughly a 85%-15% split). The associate will work in all phases of litigation, from initial client intakes to trial and appeals. Regular assignments for our associates include client interviews, drafting initial pleadings, drafting discovery requests, drafting discovery responses, and research/drafting various motions. Associates assist in deposition preparation, producing witnesses, and mediations. At the associate's comfort level, she/he will be able to take over performing depositions, motion arguments, and trial work. The position offers some flexibility, but will require the vast majority of time to be spent in the office. This is particularly true during the first several months while the associate is training and integrating into the firm. Candidate must be one of the following: (1) actively licensed to practice in Kansas (District of Kansas a plus, but not a substitute); or (2) able to transfer UBE score to Kansas; or (3) approved for admittance as far as character and fitness by Kansas and will take the bar exam in January 2026 with score to be submitted to Kansas and character and fitness underway. Candidate must be willing to become licensed in Missouri as well. Already having Missouri license is a plus. Previous experience with employment law or civil litigation is a plus but not required. Ideal candidate will be eager to learn, willing to try new assignments, and detail oriented in his/her work. Compensation Starting base salary of $80,000 - $100,000 depending on experience level, with substantial performance-based bonus opportunities
