Starting Salary:
up to $92,000 Final salary determined by experience, training, contractual requirements, and approval of the Personnel Director and Comptroller. The City of Binghamton is seeking a motivated and experienced attorney to serve as Assistant Corporation Counsel / Code Enforcement Prosecutor. This is a unique opportunity for a legal professional who thrives in litigation, public service, and collaborative problem-solving while making a direct impact on community safety and quality of life. In this role, you will lead the prosecution of City code violations and related misdemeanor offenses, working closely with Code Enforcement, Fire, Police, and other municipal departments to address unsafe properties, nuisance conditions, and violations affecting residents and neighborhoods throughout the City. This position offers meaningful courtroom experience, significant professional responsibility, and the opportunity to play a visible role in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the community. What You'll Do Prosecute City code violations and misdemeanor offenses in City Court and other appropriate courts Work collaboratively with Code Enforcement Officers, Fire Marshal, Police, Animal Control, and City departments on investigations and enforcement matters Prepare cases for hearings, trials, and appeals, including legal research, motion practice, evidence review, and witness preparation Lead interdepartmental investigations involving dangerous structures, fire-damaged properties, and public safety concerns Negotiate plea agreements and make bail recommendations where appropriate Draft legal briefs, appellate filings, and related legal documents Provide legal advice to City departments regarding enforcement and compliance issues Handle related civil enforcement actions and referrals to state or federal agencies when necessary May serve as a hearing officer for matters involving condemnations, water shutoffs, billing disputes, labor issues, and other municipal proceedings What We're Looking For The ideal candidate will bring strong courtroom skills, sound legal judgment, and the ability to work effectively with municipal staff, law enforcement, and the public in fast-paced and sometimes high-pressure situations.Successful candidates should demonstrate:
Knowledge of criminal, municipal, and/or code enforcement law Strong litigation, negotiation, and legal writing abilities Excellent analytical and organizational skills Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to work independently while collaborating across departments Commitment to public service and community improvement Minimum Qualifications Applicants must possess: A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a regionally accredited law school,AND Either:
Admission to the New York State Bar; OR A minimum of three (3) years of prosecutorial or comparable courtroom experience Why Join the City of Binghamton?
