The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) is a non-profit that has served the immigrant community on Long Island for four decades through legal services, community education and advocacy. We seek a dedicated, detail-oriented, experienced supervising attorney to join our robust, dynamic and growing legal team. The supervising attorney is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Overview of the Role The Office of New Americans (ONA) Legal Counsel program provides critical legal services to immigrants in both Nassau and Suffolk counties through direct representation, legal clinics, and community outreach. The Supervising Attorney is primarily responsible for overseeing both the substantive legal and administrative components of the program, supervising a team of attorneys, a paralegal, and a coordinator, and ensuring the provision of quality legal services for new Americans on Long Island through the Legal Counsel program.
Primary Duties:
Legal Supervision and Development Develop, administer, and oversee CARECEN's ONA Legal Counsel programming Supervise a team of attorneys, a paralegal, and a program coordinator; provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback Review and provide feedback for all affirmative and defensive applications and written work product prepared by the ONA Legal Counsel attorneys and paralegal Support staff training, onboarding, and professional development initiatives Maintain detailed records and reporting data for relevant grants and/or case management
Direct Representation:
Provide direct representation to a limited number of individuals on affirmative cases and/or in removal proceedings Partnerships and Recruitment Liaise with partner community-based organizations and other stakeholders to provide community education and other program services Represent CARECEN in coalitions and meetings Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Requirements:
Admitted and in good standing to the practice of law in New York Five or more years' experience in both affirmative and defensive immigration law (law school experience will be considered) Prior experience supervising legal teams Excellent organizational, computer, research and communication skills Creative, collaborative, self-directed and detail oriented Must be compassionate, exercise discretion, and possess cross-cultural sensitivity Fluency in English required and fluency in Spanish preferred

$85,000 to $103,750 annually
