Description:
Oklahoma incarcerates women at one of the highest rates in the country. The majority of those women are survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, or trafficking — and many are serving decades for crimes that grew directly out of the harm done to them. We are working to change that systemically and one client at a time, and we need a mission-driven lawyer who wants to be part of it. The Staff Attorney for Women's & Survivors' Criminal Justice will represent real clients seeking resentencing under the Oklahoma Survivors' Act (OSA) — many of whom have been in prison for decades — and will help build the legal infrastructure that determines whether this law delivers on its promise. You'll be in trial courts across the state, in the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, and at the table with policy advocates, expert witnesses, journalists, and survivors themselves. About the Oklahoma Survivors' Act Signed into law in 2024 after a two-year fight that overcame a gubernatorial veto, OSA allows people convicted of crimes in which domestic abuse, sexual violence, or trafficking was a substantial contributing factor to petition for resentencing under a reduced statutory range. It is the first law of its kind in the South and one of only a handful nationwide. Oklahoma Appleseed helped write it, helped pass it, and is now leading its implementation. To date, only one woman has been released under the law. Dozens more are waiting. The work is unfinished, and it is urgent.
What You'll Do:
Represent OSA clients directly in trial courts and on appeal — drafting petitions, briefs, motions, and OCCA filings; preparing and presenting evidence at resentencing hearings; working with expert witnesses on trauma, coercive control, and PTSD. Build the body of law around a brand-new statute. Early OSA decisions are shaping how courts read "substantial contributing factor," what evidence qualifies, and which relationships are covered. Your briefs will be read by judges who have never applied this law before. Coordinate pro bono partnerships with private firms taking on OSA cases, building resource guides, model briefs, and trainings so that good representation is available statewide — not just in the counties Appleseed can reach. Educate the bench, bar, and public on domestic violence, trauma, and the criminalization of survivors — through CLEs, judicial trainings, and work with mental health experts. Track and tell the story of OSA implementation: what's working, what isn't, and what needs to change next, in the courts and at the Capitol. Contribute across the criminal justice team on related reform work as your capacity and interests allow. Who We're Looking for: We can shape this role for a newer attorney looking to grow into appellate and post-conviction work, or for a more experienced litigator ready to lead. Either way, we want someone who: Sees themselves as part of a movement to reform criminal justice in Oklahoma — especially for women and survivors Writes clearly and persuasively, and enjoys the craft of brief-writing Is comfortable in a courtroom (or eager to become so) Treats clients with dignity and is willing to do the patient, trauma-informed work of building trust with people who have every reason not to trust lawyers Is curious, adaptable, and willing to push past the discomfort of not knowing everything yet Collaborates well across disciplines — with paralegals, policy staff, communications colleagues, organizers, and partner organizations
Required:
J.D. from an accredited law school Active license to practice law in Oklahoma, OR an active bar license in another state with a commitment to obtain Oklahoma admission as soon as possible Strongly preferred: Litigation experience — criminal trial or post-conviction work especially Familiarity with Oklahoma criminal procedure, OCCA practice, and post-conviction relief Experience working with survivors of trauma or with clients in carceral settings Compensation & experience levels Staff Attorney (2-7 years experience): $65,000-$80,000 Senior Staff Attorney (8+ years significant experience): $80,000-$95,000 Annual experience-based and cost-of-living raises subject to budget availability Benefits & how we support our team We mean it when we say we support our people's lives outside of work. Paid time off starting at 12 days/year and increasing with tenure 3 floating holidays plus 9 federal holidays Office closed from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day every year Unlimited sick leave — when you're sick, take care of yourself Health, dental, vision, and life insurance for full-time employees 401(k) with employer match Flexibility around the full-time work week to support family and caregiving needs Where you'll work This position is based in Tulsa, with flexibility for work-from-home as needed and openness to candidates working remotely from elsewhere in Oklahoma. Some in-state and occasional out-of-state travel is expected — court appearances, client meetings at facilities across the state, conferences, and trainings.
Our Culture:
We are a small, mission-driven team that holds high expectations and takes care of each other. We believe in lifelong learning, candid feedback, frequent collaboration, and genuine work-life balance. Every person on this team contributes substantively to the work. People of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, survivors, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Lived experience with the criminal legal system is an asset, not a disqualifier.
To Apply:
Please submit: Resume Cover letter telling us why this role, why now, and why you Writing sample (a brief, motion, memo, or other legal writing — preferably something you wrote substantially yourself) Three professional references Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Oklahoma Appleseed Center for Law & Justice is an equal opportunity employer committed to dismantling systemic racism and building a justice system that works for all Oklahomans.
