Job Description
Who We Are The OGC represents and advises the entire U-M community, including the Board of Regents, the President, the Executive Officers, the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses and Michigan Medicine. The OGC helps clients fulfill their educational, research, and entrepreneurial missions in accord with the myriad legal and policy requirements applicable to public research universities. The OGC is comprised of subject matter experts and problem solvers committed to helping clients achieve their goals in a creative, practical, and timely manner. Job Summary Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel for Michigan Medicine, this role will provide counsel and support to the University's clinical enterprise, inclusive of its fully integrated academic medical center, its medical school, and its state-wide clinical network ("Michigan Medicine"), as well as periodically advise the University's other schools, colleges, and administrative areas on health care regulatory matters. The attorney who fills this role must be able to work independently on a wide range of complex and novel issues, with a particular focus on regulatory matters. This role will work closely with senior leadership of Michigan Medicine and support the strategic goals of the organization. The role will be tailored to the unique qualifications and experiences of the selected candidate as those talents relate to client needs and other OGC team members' areas of expertise and workloads. Required Qualifications• A minimum of four (4) years' experience providing legal advice on health care matters. Experience with healthcare regulatory matters, particularly the intersection of legal and clinical risk. Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple, complex, often time-sensitive assignments simultaneously and with a high degree of organization and effectiveness. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and clients, both internal and external. Demonstrated ability to listen and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse populations. Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills. A commitment to the mission of academic medicine, higher education, and health care. Commitment to delivering expeditious, high-quality service to our clients. Unquestioned integrity, credibility, judgment, and transparency. A proactive, roll up the sleeves and hands-on approach. Team player with an ability to work well both independently and in a team environment. Ability to participate in the Michigan Medicine "attorney on call" rotation and develop expertise in other emergent patient care issues. Law degree from an accredited law school. Admission to the State Bar of Michigan Bar or eligibility for immediate admission. Desired Qualifications• Significant experience providing analysis and support to health system clinical risk departments and clinical leaders in order to advance safe, legally compliant, and patient centered care across the organization. Significant experience assessing and advising on Medicare conditions of participation for hospitals. Experience advising on clinical research matters. Experience reviewing and negotiating contracts for a health system. Experience working with public entities, academic medical centers, and non-profit, tax-exempt entities. Experience applying the Michigan Public Health and Mental Health Code. Modes of Work Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
