You will play a vital role in providing limited scope representation and general counseling on rights and responsibilities to tenants and landlords under the Rent Just Cause Ordinance. regarding presenting issues under the Richmond Fair Rent, Just Cause for Eviction, and Homeowner Protection Ordinance, as well as the Relocation Ordinance outlined in the City of Richmond's Municipal Code. The Staff Attorney will report to and work closely with the Executive Director to ensure compliance with the City of Richmond Rent Board contract. Knowledge of the City of Richmond Rent Program ordinances is a plus. The staff attorney will provide substantive, procedural, and strategic advice and counseling as to the legal rights, responsibilities, and options, available to either tenants or landlords under the City of Richmond Rent Program. This position is fully remote, except for administrative hearing appearances, if calendared and if conducting the hearing online is not available. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to provide legal guidance, advocate for housing solutions, and support both tenants and landlords navigating complex rental issues under the City of Richmond ordinances. Your expertise will help foster healthier communities through effective legal advocacy, negotiation, and education. Duties Provide legal counsel to tenants and landlords involved in rent stabilization, eviction proceedings, and housing disputes. Draft clear legal documents such as notices, pleadings, and settlement agreements that align with best practices in legal drafting. Negotiate on behalf of clients to resolve disputes amicably while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Educate tenants and landlords about their rights and responsibilities through general legal counseling and written materials. Maintain detailed case records in Project Sentinel's database, prepare monthly activity reports, and manage legal administrative tasks efficiently. Requirements Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school with active bar membership and at least 3 years of demonstrated experience and background working in tenant landlord law and a desire to work with diverse populations Proven experience in landlord-tenant law; background experience in rent board petition processes a plus; familiarity with eviction processes is essential. Strong research skills Excellent writing skills for drafting legal documents and client communications. Experience with negotiation strategies to facilitate dispute resolution. Experience in mediation, a plus Prior legal administrative experience demonstrating organization and attention to detail.
