Job Description
The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) is a nonprofit organization that has served immigrant communities on Long Island for more than four decades through legal services, community education, and advocacy. CARECEN seeks a dedicated, collaborative, and experienced Senior Supervising Attorney to join its dynamic and growing legal team. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Overview of the Role CARECEN's legal department provides critical immigration legal services throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties through direct representation, legal clinics, pro se assistance, low-fee services, community education, and outreach. The Senior Supervising Attorney is a key member of CARECEN's legal leadership team and is responsible for the legal, administrative, and operational oversight of assigned programs. This position supervises attorneys, supervising attorneys, paralegals, coordinators, and designated program leaders, while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, client-centered legal services. The Senior Supervising Attorney works closely with the Legal Director and Deputy Director to support staff development, strengthen legal services, and advance departmental goals. Primary Duties Program Leadership and Management Develop, implement, and oversee assigned legal programs in collaboration with the Legal Director. Manage program operations, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, organizational policies, and program objectives. Monitor program performance, deliverables, and reporting requirements. Identify and implement improvements to strengthen program effectiveness and client services. Supervision and Professional Development Supervise attorneys, paralegals, coordinators, supervising attorneys, and other legal staff; provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback. Conduct case reviews and provide legal guidance to ensure high-quality representation and compliance with ethical standards. Review affirmative and defensive immigration applications, legal filings, motions, briefs, and other written work product. Support staff training, onboarding, and professional development initiatives. Direct Legal Representation Maintain a limited caseload of complex affirmative and/or defensive immigration matters. Provide direct representation before USCIS, EOIR, and other relevant agencies and tribunals. Serve as a resource to staff on complex case issues, legal developments, and case strategy. Partnerships and Community Engagement Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, government agencies, funders, and other stakeholders. Represent CARECEN at meetings, coalitions, task forces, and community events. Support outreach and community education efforts, including Know Your Rights presentations. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements Admitted and in good standing to practice law in New York. Seven or more years of immigration law experience, including both affirmative and defensive practice (law school clinical experience may be considered). Demonstrated experience supervising legal staff and managing legal programs. Excellent organizational, communication, research, and technology skills. Collaborative, self-directed, detail-oriented, and solutions-focused. Demonstrated cultural competency, professionalism, discretion, and compassion. Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or another language commonly spoken in the region preferred.
Salary and Benefits Compensation:
$95,000 to $125,000 annually Work environment: Ability to work hybrid based on hybrid work agreement with office hours in CARECEN's Hempstead and Brentwood offices
