  • Posting may close at any time) 06/15/2026 Job Summary The Student Governance Advisor serves as an integral part of the professional staff within Student Governance & Leadership working directly with Associated Students of the University of Utah ( ASUU ).
They serve as a professional advisor who is responsible for advising, managing, and maintaining the day-to-day operations of the ASUU legislative branch, judicial branch, and assigned Executive Branch boards. They work collaboratively with both elected and appointed ASUU student leaders. The ASUU Office is a very engaging and fast-paced environment supporting a range of students, staff, and campus partners. The Student Governance Advisor works with the ASUU Legislative Branch to support and advise through the legislative process to develop, write, and pass ASUU legislation. This legislation can have multiple purposes, including the funding of Recognized Student Organizations (through Assembly), funding of Recognized Student Government initiatives (through Senate), and the passing of Joint Legislation through both Assembly and Senate (which tends to be funding for large-scale initiatives or student advocacy initiatives). This role also advises the Judicial Branch ( ASUU Supreme Court and Attorney General), supports the Elections Board, and other Executive Branch boards as assigned. Responsibilities Directly advises over 80 ASUU student leaders, including the ASUU General Assembly and the Student Senate. This includes providing training to ensure students are knowledgeable and effective in their roles and coordinating with branch leadership to support the development of legislation through the legislative process. Serve as the office expert of Redbook, the ASUU Constitution, and Bylaws, to inform student leadership and professional staff of possible violations and changes, in collaboration with the elected Attorney General. Assists in supporting the Elections Board to help students strategize, implement, and evaluate all initiatives, public relations, and communications regarding ASUU's elections process to students, faculty, staff, and University administrators. Work to assure leadership development of University of Utah students, including direct advisees, ASUU student leaders, and the campus community at large through advising, presentations and mentorship. Advises the Judicial Branch, in collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, including the Supreme Court and Attorney General and their activities. Attends meetings of the Legislative and Judicial Branch to assure proper decorum and effective operations and record-keeping of ASUU legislation and hearings. Serve as an advisor for an ex officio member of ASUU internal committees, including but not limited to the subcommittees, rules, and joint committees. Work with the student leadership to host trainings for the various positions at the beginning of their term, as new members are appointed and as needed. May supervise one part time employee. May assist general students in understanding the rules and procedures of ASUU . Stays abreast of legislative action by the Academic Senate, Board of Trustees, and Board of Regents impacting the program and makes recommendations for improvement and compliance. Coordinate reports, and regular updates regarding the communications efforts and functions of ASUU legislative action. Provides general office support, including assisting students and providing office customer service, assist in the revision and implementation of policies and procedures, and to participate as staff representation on existing university committees. Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master's degree in a related area may be preferred. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
