DOE Reports to: General Counsel/Director of Legal Department Position Summary The Stillaguamish Tribe's Legal Department is staffed by the General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department, Associate General Counsels, Tribal Attorneys, outside counsel, paralegals and the Realty Officer. The department provides legal services covering a broad and diverse range of tribal government and federal Indian law issues. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide legal services to the tribal government, its various departments, commissions and committees, and to its enterprises. Other legal duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities May act as department director and main point of contact in the absence of the Legal Director. Assists the Legal Director in the enforcement of company rules and policies and in completing necessary paperwork. Develops, oversee, and maintains competent tribal attorneys and paralegals, who deliver continuous improvement results. Assists in training all new employees on the department procedures. Ensures that all tribal attorneys and paralegals have the training, tools, and equipment to complete and perform their responsibilities. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to courts, administrative bodies, top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Position Qualifications Candidate must have graduated from an ABA accredited law school. Be licensed to practice in Washington State. Must be able to be licensed to practice before the Stillaguamish Tribal Court. At least five years of experience, preferably in Indian Country. Have a thorough knowledge of federal Indian law and gaming, have good litigation skills. Have strong negotiation and interpersonal communication skills, and strong writing skills. Candidates must demonstrate ability to work collegially, a commitment to the Tribal community, and a strong ethical character. The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and a pre-employment background check in accordance with the Tribe's Human Resources, Drug Free Workplace and Employee Drug Testing Policies.
