Open Until Filled About Us About the Law Department The Law Department, under the direction of the City Attorney, provides comprehensive legal services to the City (as a whole) as well as the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and all City entities. It represents the City in all legal matters, manages litigation, prosecutes ordinance violations, and provides legal counsel on issues affecting municipal interests. The Department reviews and approves contracts and official documents, prepares legislation, and performs additional duties assigned by ordinance or resolution. Organized to address a broad range of legal areas, including corporate, litigation, and prosecutorial functions, the Department ensures compliance with the law, supports effective governance, and protects the City's legal and financial interests. Responsibilities What You'll Do:

Supervises five paralegals in the Collections Unit while continuing to perform the functions of the underlying substantive position. Provides guidance and assistance to assigned paralegal staff. Assigns day-to-day tasks to balance workload distribution among team members. Reviews legal work for accuracy. Trains new staff members. Acts as a mentor and role model for the team. Serves as a liaison between attorneys and the paralegal staff. Resolves problems that arise, with assistance from the Managing Attorney when needed. Addresses issues affecting daily workflow and operations. Provides performance feedback to team members. Conducts employee evaluations. Ensures compliance with Departmental and City rules and regulations. Manages thousands of post-judgment earnings tax collection cases. Researches employment and bank information to determine where a garnishment would be most effective. Drafts garnishments to collect underlying amounts due on judgments. Drafts Satisfactions of Judgment. Drafts releases of garnishments. Drafts payoff letters for title companies. Monitors payment plans established for assigned cases. Interacts with the public through email, phone calls, and walk-in inquiries. Qualifications

REQUIRES

An accredited Bachelor's degree and one (1) year experience in one or more of the following areas: paralegal, law, conducting research and/or investigations, drafting legal documents, or administrative work in a legal setting or law office; OR Accredited Associate's degree and three (3) years' experience in one or more of the following areas: paralegal, law, conducting research and/or investigations, drafting legal documents, or administrative work in a legal setting or law office; OR High school graduation and five (5) years' experience in one or more of the following areas: paralegal, law, research, investigations, drafting legal documents, or administrative work in a legal setting or law office. Must pass a background check as prescribed by the City. For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained. Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical. If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
