Job Description

We're excited to announce a new opportunity to join the Town of Erie as a Paralegal I or Paralegal II , dependent on qualifications. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic legal environment and is ready to make a meaningful impact through high‑quality administrative and legal support. The individual in this position will perform moderate legal administrative work in support of the Town Attorney, Deputy Town Attorney, and Assistant Town Attorneys. Key responsibilities include drafting and finalizing memorandums, letters, and legal documents; providing litigation support; maintaining records; managing files and case work; and handling budget and accounts‑payable processes. The role also provides direct administrative support to attorneys as needed, including managing meetings, communications, and clerical tasks. Success in this position requires familiarity with legal terminology, strong customer service skills for daily interactions with the public, employees, and the Town Mayor/Council, and the ability to work with limited supervision. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail‑oriented, and confident in performing both standard and advanced administrative duties. Anticipated Work Schedule:
Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flexibility is essential, as the role requires attendance at evening Town Council and committee meetings when scheduled. This position includes an office at Town Hall and requires a minimum of three in-office days per week, with the option to work remotely for up to two days. Due to the complexity of the role, additional in-office days may be necessary. There may be times where five days a week may be required, as well as court and administrative hearings. Work hours are subject to change in accordance with the needs of the Town and may include occasional adjustments.

Salary Ranges:
Minimum Midpoint Maximum Paralegal I $30.91/hour $35.70/hour $40.49/hour Paralegal II $33.23/hour $38.38/hour $43.53/hour Salary will depend on the selected candidate's qualifications. The budgeted hiring range is between minimum and midpoint. The full salary range is displayed to show the potential for growth for our future hire.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducts research and summarizes laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, transactional matters, opinions, pleadings, briefs, and other documentation. Investigates the facts of cases to communicate all relevant information to an attorney. Collects, compiles, organizes, and analyzes various data for use in reports and documentation. Prepares and presents written legal analysis, reports, and recommendations to attorneys. Assists in the preparation, revision, and execution of routine contracts and may respond to counter proposals or related documentation and exhibits. Responds to client inquiries and communications and performs document management. Prepares correspondence and legal documents requiring thorough knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Evidence, legal format, terminology, and procedures. Assists with liquor license applications and hearings. Assists attorneys with state, federal, and administrative litigation matters including the calendaring, coordination and preparation of pleadings, motions, affidavits, exhibits, discovery, and responses. May attend arbitration, hearings, or court dates. Assembles and prepares documentation or exhibits based on materials developed during the investigatory or discovery stage, prepares witness and exhibit binders for deposition, trial, administrative hearings, mediation, or transactional closings. Provides legal support for Town Attorney's office in drafting, proofreading, and editing legal documents, including contracts, memos, letters, reports, deeds, ordinances, resolutions, and presentations. Prepares Town Council agenda materials including drafting of ordinances, resolutions, and related exhibits. Provides general administrative assistant office duties such answering phone calls, calendaring, and responding to emails for Town Attorney's office. May also purchase supplies and arrange for maintenance of Town Attorney's Office equipment. Assists the Town Attorney with office operations, including budget tracking, monitoring expenditures and processing invoices, law library maintenance, and Westlaw account management. Maintains and manages Town Attorney's calendar for appointments, travel, hearing dates, and due dates as needed. Responsible for file and case management, including opening and tracking of all legal files, maintaining litigation and project files. Maintains relatively complex records, including master files, case files, and library maintenance in accordance with established systems. Facilitates the legal review of Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) or Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA) requests and coordinates with departments to redact and organize responsive records using JustFOIA. Participates in the preparation of the Town Attorney Office's annual budget. Prepares Town Attorney's office purchase orders and processes invoices for payment within Town policies. Performs cost control activities such as monitoring expenditures to assure sound fiscal control. Assists in the development of short and long-range goals including annual efforts to advance the Town's mission, goals, and objectives. Contributes to the preparation and review of departmental policies and procedures as necessary to maintain the effectiveness of departmental programs. Possesses knowledge of legal terminology and the forms and documents used in municipal legal work. Provides strong customer service and communication skills whether in verbal or written communication when interacting with all levels of personnel within the Town and the general public in a positive and cooperative manner. Proofreads copy and corrects errors (typographical, grammatical, punctuation, and informational) then distributes as needed. Processes, sorts and files mail, purchase orders, financial records, and other documents. Manages their workload to achieve departmental goals. Assures that responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations, Town of Erie policies and procedures, and the Town of Erie Municipal Code. Assists in recommending and implementing modifications to systems, policies, and procedures. Identifies and recommends changes or improvements in departmental operations to ensure assigned functions are efficient and cost effective. May perform other duties as assigned.
