Muslim Legal Fund of America is a 501(c)(3) charity that funds legal work and programs to defend Muslims against injustice in America's courtrooms, prisons, and communities. Our mission is to advance equality and justice for American Muslim organizations and individuals by combating the injustices done in the name of national security.
JOB SUMMARY
The Paralegal will assist attorneys with document preparation, research, and case management. To be successful in this role, a paralegal must have strong communication and legal writing skills in addition to a passion for justice for all. The candidate should be detail-oriented and organized; possess the ability to work both independently and in a team environment; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; be able to prioritize and meet deadlines effectively; and be able to obtain and analyze relevant records. Contributing to a supportive, uplifting, and amiable team environment is a priority. The paralegal will be crucial in helping to develop and grow our Nonprofit Governance Department at MLFA, to further our mission and help Muslim American nonprofit organizations ensure transparency, sustainability and accountability both internally and externally. Responsibilities Support Nonprofit Governance attorneys with administrative tasks, client communication, and document preparation. Conduct OFAC and other database searches and research in accordance with US sanctions compliance laws. Perform legal and compliance research relevant to nonprofit governance matters. Assist with client intakes, pre-representation research, and conflicts checks. Gather and organize documentation relevant to clients and matters. Draft case update summaries and assist with website content related to department work. Collaborate with attorneys and community partners on educational events, trainings, policy projects, presentations, and webinars. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required. Experience and Education Bachelor's degree and valid paralegal certificate required. Minimum of two years of paralegal experience. Advanced legal research and writing skills. Experience with OFAC screening, US sanctions compliance, or similar regulatory research preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe; familiarity with LegalServer, PACER, Lexis, or Westlaw preferred. Experience working with marginalized communities, grassroots organizations, or NGOs. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and public interest work. Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.
