Job Description

Parking Security Officer (Part-Time) Maryland Zoo is an EEO Employer -
M/F/Disability/Protected Veteran StatusGeneral Summary:
The Parking Security Officer will directvehicles and greet guests in the parking lots, provide safety resources andwork in zoo areas, as assigned. Additionally, the Parking Security Officer willsupport the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, governance sustainability, conservation, education, and DEAI (Diversity,Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) goals.
Hours of Shift:
Friday - Monday, 9:30 AM - 4:30
PMEssentialFunctions:
PrimaryFunctions:
  • Direct cars, buses and other traffic intoappropriate parking, drop off or delivery areas;
  • Open and close parking lots as necessary;
  • Monitor all parking areas to prevent break-insand/or vandalism of vehicles and Zoo property;
  • Keep all parking areas and entrance areas clean andfree of litter;
  • Place directional signs, cones and barricades asneeded;
  • Direct vehicles and pedestrians with flags and otherhand-held devices;
  • Work in and/or help out in any aspect of Zoooperations as directed when appropriate;
  • Ensure guest safety at alltimes;
  • Perform other duties asassigned; and,
  • Ad to allpolicies and procedures of the Zoo.
Communication(Internal and External):
  • Greetguests and respond appropriately toguests' questions, comments, or concerns in a friendly, professional, and informed manner;
  • Monitorunauthorized persons and loitering in or around the parking lots and notifyDispatch and/ or management of suspicious persons or activities;
  • Communicate with the SecurityDepartment by radio contact as needed following Zoo radio etiquette andprotocol at all times; and,
  • Contact an appropriateSecurity staff member necessary to resolve security issues by radio contact asneeded to communicate information.
Managementof Resources (Financial, Human Resources, Facilities):
  • Monitor guests' behavior toensure their safety on and around the parking lots near the Main Gate.
MinimumQualifications:
Education:
  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required
Experience/Training:
  • Minimum of six months relatedexperience and/or training.
  • Exposure to first aid and/orCPR training a plus.
  • Exposure to safety andsecurity protocols preferred.
Hospitality:
  • Friendly disposition;
  • Possess a positive andpatient attitude; and
  • Possess excellent verbalcommunication skills.
Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to stand, walkand/or run, and remain active for an eight-hour shift;
  • Mustbe able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
  • Must be able to work in anoutdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, includingheat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;
  • Ability to work a flexibleschedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; and,
  • Mustbe able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequentlyand/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry,push, pull or otherwise move objects; and,
  • Exposure to potential environmental hazards such as poison oak/ivy, uneven terrain, insect bites/stings, and Hepatitis B depending on the position.
Equipment:
  • Mustbe able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including telephone,two-way radio, etc.
Traits Desirable:
  • Possessa clear comprehension of vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow;
  • Possessan outgoing personality with the ability to approach guests and take charge ofchallenging situations;
  • Ability to work withindividuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds;
  • Ability to identify andresolve guest issues; and,
  • Abilityto work independently and stay productive with minimal direct supervision.
