Representive Duties Conduct investigions and prepare reports for the Court with recommendions. Interview offenders/ defendants and their families and collect background da from various sources. Interpret and apply policies and procedures, stutes, Federal Rules of Criminal Procedures , and U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, Monographs, and relevant case law, as applicable. Enforce court-ordered supervision conditions and implement supervision stregies. Maintain personal contact with defendants or offenders through office and community contacts to maximize adherence to imposed conditions, reduce risk of danger to the community, reduce risk of nonappearance, and to provide correctional trement. Collect and conduct urinalysis tests of offenders/defendants, following established procedures and protocols. Maintain paper and computerized records of test results. Maintain chain of custody of urinalysis testing merials. Maintain detailed written records of case activity. Investige employment, sources of income, lifestyle, and associes to assess risk and compliance. Responsible for detection of substance abuse. Through assessment and counseling, implement the necessary trement or violion proceedings. Refer defendants or offenders to approprie outside agencies such as medical and drug trement facilities, employment and training. Analyze and respond to any objections to sentencing recommendions. This may include resolving disputed issues and presenting unresolved issues to the court for resolution. Assess risk level of defendants or offenders and develop a blend of stregies for controlling and correcting risk. Assure the protection of the constitutional rights of defendants through the stutory mande to assess risk of nonappearance and danger to the community. Enforce pretrial and post-conviction supervision conditions through evidence-based practices of effective supervision. Respond to judicial officer's requests for informion and advice. Testify in court as to the basis for factual findings and guideline applicions. Serve as a resource to the court to facilite proper imposition of release or sentence. Initie contact with, reply to, and seek informion from organizions and persons such as the U.S. Parole Commission, Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Attorney's Office, and various law enforcement, correctional and social service agencies. Detect and investige violions and implement approprie alternives and sanctions. Report violions of the conditions of supervision to the approprie authorities. Prepare well written, grammically correct, objective reports for the court's considerion regarding pretrial, presentence, and/or post-conviction supervision issues. Knowledge of, and compliance with, the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees and court confidentiality requirements. Ability to demonstre sound ethics and mure, professional judgment as an objective, neutral officer of the court. Qualificions Minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience, gained after completion of a bachelor's degree, in such fields as probion, pretrial services, parole, or corrections, criminal investigions, or work in substance/addiction trement. Experience as a police, custodial, or security officer, other than any criminal investigive experience, is not creditable. The duties of probion officers require the investigion and management of convicted criminal offenders who present physical danger to officers and to the public. In the supervision, trement, and control of these offenders, these duties require modere to arduous physical exercise, including prolonged periods of walking and standing, physical dexterity and coordinion necessary to opere a firearm, and use of self-defense tactics. On a daily basis, these officers face unusual mental and physical stress because they are subject to danger and possible harm during frequent, direct contact with individuals who are convicted of committing Federal offenses. Prior to appointment, the selectee considered for this position is required to undergo an extensive medical examinion and drug screening. Upon successful completion of the medical examinion and drug screening, the selectee may then be appointed provisionally, pending a favorable suitability determinion by the court. Continued employment contingent on successful completion of the OPM investigion. In addition, the incumbent subject to ongoing random drug screening and upded background investigions every five years. Because officers must effectively deal with physical tacks and are subject to modere or arduous physical exertion, applicants must be physically capable. Officers must possess, with or without corrective lenses, good distance vision in least one eye and the ability to read normal size print. Normal hearing ability, with or without a hearing aid, is also required. In most instances, the ampution of an arm, hand, leg, or foot will not disqualify an applicant from appointment, although it may be necessary for the applicant to use prosthesis to compense for the ampution. Any severe health problems, however, such as physical defects, disease, and deformities th constitute employment hazards to the applicant or others, may disqualify an applicant. Examples of health problems th may be disqualifying are untreed hernia, cardiovascular disorders, serious deformities or disability of the extremities, mental health disorders, fainting and/or seizures, metabolic disorders, bleeding disorders, pulmonary disorders, and marked speech abnormalities. Maximum Entry Age First-time appointees to positions covered under law enforcement officer retirement provisions must not have reached their 37th birthday the time of appointment. Applicants 37 or over who have previous law enforcement officer experience under the Civil Service Retirement System or the Federal Employees' Retirement System and who have either a subsequent break in service or intervening service in a non-law enforcement officer position may have their previous law enforcement officer experience subtracted from their age to determine whether they meet the maximum age requirement.
