Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Family Division Administrator or designee, the Probation Officer Supervisor is responsible for supervising the work performed by Probation Officers and for evaluating the effectiveness of their casework activities. The Probation Officer Supervisor assists with coordinating and monitoring effective community-based and institutional-based prevention and/or rehabilitation programs, as well as specialized Court programs. The Probation Officer Supervisor is responsible for orientation of new Probation Officers and ongoing casework training. The Probation Officer Supervisor receives and reviews all hearing reports and assures their timely submission to the Court. The Probation Officer Supervisor ensures that Probation Officers analyze and assess each juvenile's service needs prior to making recommendations for out-of-home placements and ensures that appropriate community-based services are utilized whenever possible. In addition, the Probation Officer Supervisor is responsible for assisting with the operational activities of the Court Services Division this includes assisting in planning, organizing, directing program operations, supervising staff in case processing functions, case flow management, file management, program evaluation and supervision of the daily operations of the Court Services Division. Duties are carried out in accordance with the Court's statutory purpose, policies and procedures and in accordance with Berrien County's policies and procedures. The person in this position serves as an at-will employee.
TYPICAL DUTIES
(An employee in this class may be assigned any or all of the following tasks. These tasks are illustrative only and do not include all of the tasks which may be assigned.) 1. Under the direct supervision of the Family Division Administrator or designee, the Probation Officer Supervisor is responsible for providing professional supervision for all Probation Officers, other professional staff and interns within the Court Services Division. 2. Assists the Family Division Administrator, Probation Officers and other professional staff in carrying out Departmental goals and objectives. 3. Works closely with the Probation Officers and other professional staff to assure program effectiveness and staff accountability. Assures professional performance standards are met, as well as other issues affecting the Court Services Division. 4. Assists in the formulation of goals, measurable objectives and corresponding implementation plans that establish priorities, guide current and future operations, and develops strategies, and programs necessary to achieve them for the Court Services Division. 5. Reviews and monitors cases, and conducts case staffings to analyze and assess proper placement and treatment of youth. 6. Aides in the development of Court prevention programs aimed at reducing formal Court involvement. 7. Participates in staff interviews, assists in making hiring recommendations and provides orientation and training for Probation Officers. 8. Reviews all hearing reports, monthly reports, and other case records for completeness and accuracy to ensure compliance with Court standards. 9. Ensures that Probation Officers implement and maintain the case management system for all cases assigned for supervision, and conducts routine case reviews and audits to ensure quality assurance and data integrity standards. 10. Provides for case coverage for Probation Officers during periods of absences to ensure continued case monitoring and supervision. 11. Consults with Probation Officers with respect to conducting social investigations on delinquent cases to ensure quality investigations are conducted and factual reports are submitted to the Court. 12. Assists Probation Officers in providing crisis intervention for minors and their families regarding problems and conflicts and helps Probation Officers resolve issues that could result in further Court action. 13. Monitors and maintains contact with community agencies such as; schools, police agencies, public and/or private social service organizations. Participates with these organizations in developing community based prevention and treatment programs. 14. Reviews and evaluates employee work performance on a day-to-day basis and conducts required employee performance evaluations. Advises, counsels and/or recommends discipline as necessary. 15. Responds to and provides written documentation regarding internal and external complaints. 16. Develops, recommends, and supervises the implementation of policies, procedures, programs, data collection, evaluation methods, and conducts periodic reviews of same. 17. Participates in public relations activities when requested and acts as liaison between Probation Officers and law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, and other community service agencies. 18. Maintains and supervises a limited probation caseload as necessary. 19. Performs other related duties as requested by the Family Division Administrator or Judges. 20. May be assigned to work flexible hours in the fulfillment of his/her duties as directed.

$64,762.00 - $86,787.00 per year
