Primary Work Location:
The primary work location for this role is at a new program at the Radisson hotel in Oakland. Training will occur at other locations in the Bay Area. This program is one of several Cardea Health transitional housing programs for medically complex and behaviorally vulnerable unhoused individuals. Cardea Health's transitional housing programs work with a variety of different referring partners across Alameda County. Our transitional housing programs provide supportive services including onsite nurse and caregiver supports, transportation to medical appointments, meals, housing support linkage, and more.
Job Summary:
We are seeking professional, punctual, and responsible individuals to work as part of a multidisciplinary team at a medically supported shelter program serving people experiencing homelessness who are recovering from recent hospitalization, injury, or illness. As Security and Shelter Operators, you will play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for our residents. You will be responsible for ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the premises, controlling access to the building, conducting security checks, responding to emergencies, performing room and floor inspections, and assisting with general facility upkeep. Security and Shelter Operators are expected to work closely with shelter nurses and housing staff to facilitate quality and timely care of shelter residents. This position requires the ability and desire to work with a diverse group of individuals in a respectful and professional manner.
Job Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision Supervise and support Shelter and Security Operators, including scheduling, timekeeping, coaching, and daily check-ins Ensure adequate shift coverage, including stepping in when needed Train new staff in job duties, safety protocols, de-escalation and trauma-informed approaches Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and support to operators to ensure high-quality service delivery Maintain documentation of performance concerns, incidents, and follow-up actions Model professionalism, hospitality, and de-escalation techniques for team members Hospitality and Professionalism Serve as a welcoming and steady presence for residents, staff, and visitors Uphold a clean, calm, and respectful environment on-site Practice and reinforce principles of hospitality, customer service, de-escalation, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care with all site users Security and Safety Oversee the management of all facility access points and tracking systems (logs, sign-ins, supplies, weapons) Conduct and delegate regular safety patrols and monitor surveillance systems Respond directly to any safety concerns or incidents, including contraband, weapons, and interpersonal conflicts Support Operators in safely de-escalating challenging situations and resolving resident conflicts Communicate urgent safety issues to Program Manager and other leadership Emergency Response Act as primary point of contact for emergency situations during your shift Direct Operators and residents during medical or security emergencies Ensure compliance with emergency protocols and assist in post-incident documentation and debriefs Facility Oversight Assist with and supervise light cleaning, laundry and facilities operations tasks to maintain cleanliness standards Monitor and report facility issues (plumbing, heating, sanitation) and ensure timely follow-up Inspections and Reporting Lead or delegate daily room checks, log documentation, and safety walk-throughs Maintain clear, accurate reports regarding incidents, safety concerns, and staff performance Communication and Collaboration Coordinate closely with onsite nurses, caregivers, housing staff, and Program Manager Facilitate clear, respectful communication between the team and other departments Assist with relaying program information and updates to residents in a consistent and trauma-informed way
Minimum Required Skills & Qualifications:
Be 21 years of age or older 1-2 years of supervisory or lead experience preferred Prior experience working with unhoused or medically vulnerable individuals Strong communication and conflict resolution skills Experience managing or supporting a team, including shift scheduling Comfortable using computers for basic documentation and email communication Be CPR certified or willing to complete certification upon hire Offer of employment contingent on successful completion of background check
