Job Summary This posting may be used to fill multiple permanent, full-time (80 hours) within the Community Based Services team at MN Direct Care & Treatment. Direct Care and Treatment is seeking a Safety Administrator to support Community Based Services. CBS provides residential, vocational, crisis, and community-based supports to individuals with complex behavioral health needs, mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and related support needs across Minnesota. The Safety Administrator provides professional leadership in safety, health, emergency preparedness, environmental risk reduction, and occupational injury prevention across a geographically dispersed service system. This position helps ensure safe, compliant, trauma-informed, and therapeutic environments for people served, staff, and visitors by identifying safety risks, supporting regulatory compliance, strengthening emergency preparedness, analyzing injury and incident trends, and partnering with program leaders to implement practical safety improvements.
Primary responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and continuously improve CBS safety, health, emergency preparedness, and risk-reduction practices in alignment with DCT policy, regulatory requirements, and CBS operational needs. Conduct safety assessments, site reviews, hazard evaluations, environmental risk reviews, and follow-up monitoring across CBS residential, vocational, crisis, and administrative program locations. Analyze workplace injury trends, safety incidents, environmental concerns, and risk patterns; recommend corrective actions; and support leaders in implementing sustainable improvements. Provide consultation, coaching, and technical assistance to directors, managers, supervisors, safety committees, and frontline teams on occupational safety, emergency preparedness, OSHA requirements, ergonomics, infection control/safety interfaces, and injury prevention. Support emergency preparedness planning, drills, continuity planning, evacuation procedures, severe weather response, workplace violence prevention, and other safety-related readiness activities. Partner with CBS program leaders, DCT Quality/Health/Safety staff, Facilities, Human Resources, Workers' Compensation, Labor Relations, and other stakeholders to improve safety practices and reduce risk. Develop and deliver safety-related training, tools, communications, and practical guidance for supervisors and staff working in community-based service settings. Monitor compliance with applicable federal and state safety requirements and support preparation for audits, surveys, reviews, and corrective action plans. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience in occupational safety, health, emergency preparedness, risk management, environmental safety, or workplace injury prevention experience in a large, complex, geographically dispersed, healthcare, human services, residential, or public-sector organization.
Experience must demonstrate the following:
Identifying occupational safety and health risks and developing practical solutions. Interpreting and applying federal and state safety requirements, including OSHA standards. Conducting safety inspections, hazard assessments, risk reviews, or corrective action follow-up. Supporting emergency preparedness, injury prevention, employee safety, or workplace violence prevention efforts. Communicating technical safety information to leaders, supervisors, and staff in clear, practical ways. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve safety practices.
Note:
A bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, or related field may substitute for 1 year of experience. A master's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, or related field may substitute for 2 years of experience. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's or master's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, public health, emergency management, environmental health, risk management, or a closely related field. Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Healthcare Safety Professional, OSHA-authorized trainer, or related safety/emergency management certification. Experience supporting safety programs in behavioral health, disability services, residential services, healthcare, human services, corrections, public-sector, or other 24/7 operational settings, AND experience with CARF and 245D licensed settings. Experience with workplace violence prevention, behavioral health safety risks, emergency preparedness, injury reduction, ergonomics, OSHA compliance, safety committees, inspections, audits, and corrective action plans. Experience using data to identify safety trends, recommend improvements, and communicate risk to operational leaders. Experience working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, including individuals with disabilities, mental illness, trauma histories, or complex support needs.
