The Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) advances workplace safety in New Mexico through compliance inspections, consultation services, compliance assistance, public sector consultation, outreach, education, and recognition programs. By strengthening occupational health and safety, the OHSB saves lives, improves the well-being of New Mexico's workforce, and supports the state's economic vitality. The Manager role exists to provide strategic leadership that ensures the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) achieve their long-term mission and performance goals. This position adds value by integrating organizational priorities into efficient, effective program operations and by guiding the responsible use of human, financial, and operational resources. The Manager serves as a unifying force across initiatives, promoting accountability, ethical conduct, transparent decision-making, and collaborative relationships with NMED's diverse constituencies, to ensure that OHSB programs deliver meaningful impact for workers, employers, and the public. How does it get done? Guide long-term strategic planning and develop performance measures and operational practices that advance organizational goals Oversee quality assurance processes to ensure programs comply with federal and state Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) requirements Foster collaborative relationships with public agencies, employers, and other stakeholders to support statewide occupational health and safety objectives Develop staff through clear expectations, progress monitoring, performance assessments, and ongoing coaching and feedback Direct work assignments by establishing priorities and deadlines, reviewing deliverables, ensuring policy compliance, and promoting a productive team environment Evaluate operational structures, communication practices, and internal procedures to improve efficiency, workflow, and regulatory compliance Manage budgets, expenditures, and audit activities to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with program goals Who are the customers? New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Ideal Candidate New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, engineering, physical science, natural science, environmental science, social science, criminology, or closely related field and nine (9) years of related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling thirteen (13) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certificate as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
