Job Description:
Nassau Community College invites applications for a full-time Director of Special Programs in the Office of Environmental Health & Safety. The Director of Special Programs will provide a broad range of support to plan, organize, and manage all activities related to assigned department(s)/area(s) in alignment with the College's Strategic Plan and Goals, while upholding the highest ethical standards. The Director is expected to work expeditiously and diligently on behalf of the institution, using a data-informed and equity-focused approach to support the College's mission and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Develop, implement, and oversee occupational health, safety, and environmental programs, policies, procedures, and training to reduce occupational injuries, enhance employee safety, protect the environment, and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Develop and maintain campus Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) accident reporting and recordkeeping systems. Serve as the primary liaison between the College and regulatory agencies on matters related to Environmental Health & Safety. Oversee and approve the procurement of chemicals and hazardous materials used on campus; ensure Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) are maintained and readily available to College employees. Collaborate with applicable departments to develop and maintain chemical inventories. Perform and/or oversee employee exposure assessments and recommend appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), as necessary. Review contract documents, building plans, and blueprints to ensure applicable health and safety codes and standards are addressed. Oversee environmental consultants, including the detection and analysis of environmental hazards such as mold, asbestos, and other hazardous materials; define the scope of remediation efforts and oversee follow-up inspections and remediation activities. Develop, supervise, and direct assigned staff. Maintain current knowledge of applicable laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and pending legislation related to assigned areas of responsibility. Assist with all internal and external reporting required for local, state, and federal compliance. Assist with the implementation, assessment, and evaluation of policies, processes, and procedures related to assigned areas. Identify opportunities to eliminate redundancies and improve operational efficiency within assigned areas while collaborating with other administrators to support the effective and efficient operation of the College. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and community partners to support initiatives within assigned areas. Demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability in the development and administration of the department's annual budget; analyze budgetary and financial data and authorize expenditures within established resources and limitations. Participate in professional development activities and serve on College committees, as assigned. Work effectively with diverse populations. Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field. Three (3) years of professional experience in Environmental Health and Safety. Two (2) years of project management and supervisory experience. Current professional certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or another relevant Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field. Experience working at a community college or other institution of higher education. Experience working in a unionized environment. Current OSHA HAZWOPER and/or
DOT/RCRA
training or certification. Experience using enterprise systems and software commonly utilized in higher education and Environmental Health & Safety operations, including Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, Microsoft Visio, and Adobe Acrobat Professional. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate will demonstrate: Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations applicable to higher education, including but not limited to OSHA/PESH, USEPA, NYSDEC, DOT, and ANSI standards. Knowledge of contract administration and the ability to effectively negotiate with vendors. Familiarity with the mission, goals, and objectives of the College, as well as the demographics of its student body and workforce. Knowledge of the local community and the College's service area. Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and work independently. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify issues, analyze data, and make sound recommendations. Excellent oral, written, presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to interpret, apply, and explain applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners. Ability to manage and adapt to change, make difficult decisions, facilitate conflict resolution, and promote employee and departmental accountability. Strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills. A high level of emotional intelligence, professionalism, and energy.
Additional Information:
The starting salary for this position is $85,000 annually.
