Job Description

DOT Safety Manager Position Summary The DOT Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive driver safety and regulatory compliance program. This position ensures compliance with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations while promoting a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement. The DOT Safety Manager works directly with drivers, operations, maintenance, and leadership to reduce risk, prevent accidents, improve driver performance, and protect the company's reputation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Hours of Service (HOS) Compliance Monitor driver Hours of Service (HOS) compliance through the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) system. Review violations, unidentified driver miles, and uncertified logs daily. Contact drivers promptly to discuss violations, corrective actions, and compliance expectations. Educate drivers on FMCSA regulations and the legal and financial consequences of non-compliance. Provide ELD troubleshooting and support to minimize preventable violations. Escalate repeated or intentional violations through progressive disciplinary action, including meetings with company leadership when necessary. Speed Monitoring & Driver Performance Monitor driver speed and driving behavior using Speed Gauge and other telematics platforms. Identify repeat speeding violations and high-risk driving patterns. Coach drivers immediately regarding unsafe driving behaviors. Administer progressive discipline as appropriate. Investigate and respond to public complaints involving speeding, reckless driving, or unsafe vehicle operation. Accident & Incident Investigation Investigate all vehicle accidents and incidents, regardless of fault. Collect statements, photographs, reports, telematics, and supporting documentation. Determine root causes and contributing factors. Develop recommendations and corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Share lessons learned through safety bulletins, driver coaching, and dispatch communications. Investigate DOT violations, roadside inspections, and out-of-service events. Determine whether issues are related to driver inspections, maintenance deficiencies, or communication breakdowns. Report findings and recommendations to company leadership. New Driver Safety Program Closely monitor all newly hired drivers during their first 30 days of employment.
Review telematics data including:
Speeding Hard braking Over-revving Harsh acceleration Other unsafe driving indicators Review in-cab camera footage when necessary. Conduct early coaching sessions to correct unsafe behaviors. Reinforce company safety expectations and maintain a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe driving during the probationary period. Terminal Safety Engagement Conduct monthly safety visits to all company terminals. Review recent safety trends, incidents, and operational concerns. Lead safety discussions and distribute educational materials. Encourage driver participation and feedback. Strengthen communication between drivers, operations, and management through regular face-to-face interaction. DOT Compliance & Regulatory Reporting Conduct annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) reviews and FMCSA Clearinghouse checks for all drivers. Review findings with drivers and obtain signed acknowledgments. Maintain current knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations. Communicate regulatory updates to drivers, dispatch personnel, and management. Report compliance concerns, risks, and recommended corrective actions to leadership. Orientation & Driver Training Train drivers on company safety policies, FMCSA regulations, and DOT compliance requirements. Provide Electronic Logging Device (ELD) instruction and support. Reinforce expectations regarding professionalism, accountability, and safe operating practices. Equipment & DOT Readiness Perform DOT inspections on vehicles assigned to new hires prior to release. Verify all equipment meets DOT safety requirements. Coordinate with the maintenance department to ensure deficiencies are corrected before equipment is placed into service. Safety Program Development Participate in planning and facilitating company safety meetings. Develop new safety initiatives, training programs, and educational materials. Analyze safety trends to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Promote a positive safety culture through visible leadership, coaching, and employee engagement. Serve as a trusted resource for drivers, supervisors, and management regarding safety and regulatory compliance. Qualifications Working knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations. Experience with Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), Hours of Service regulations, and driver compliance. Experience using telematics systems such as Speed Gauge or similar driver monitoring platforms. Strong accident investigation and root cause analysis skills. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to coach, mentor, and hold drivers accountable while maintaining positive working relationships. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and transportation management software. Valid driver's license required; Performance Expectations Success in this role is measured by: Reduction in HOS violations. Reduction in speeding events and unsafe driving behaviors. Reduction in preventable accidents and DOT violations. Improved driver compliance and safety performance. Successful completion of required regulatory audits and inspections. Effective driver coaching and documentation. Increased engagement and participation in company safety initiatives.
Pay:
$70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
