Job Title:
EHS Manager Job Description The EHS Manager leads field safety for complex commercial construction projects across NYC and NJ, with a strong focus on scaffolding, hoisting, and high-rise access systems. This role oversees regulatory compliance, drives a proactive safety culture, and serves as the primary safety authority on job sites, ensuring safe execution of work and protection of workers, clients, and the public. Responsibilities Act as the primary safety leader in the field, supporting branch operations across NYC job sites and surrounding areas. Lead safety execution for scaffold systems, material and personnel hoists, and suspended access systems on commercial and high-rise construction projects. Exercise authority to stop work when unsafe conditions exist and ensure corrective actions occur before work resumes. Ensure compliance with NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) Chapter 33 and applicable OSHA, DOT, MSHA, EPA, FDNY, and NFPA regulations. Support responses to NYC DOB violations, audits, and stop work orders, including documentation, follow-up, and closure of findings. Partner with engineering and operations teams on pre-task planning, safety-related filings, and development of site-specific safety plans. Conduct regular job site inspections and safety observations across field and yard operations. Perform Safe System of Work Plan (SSWP) audits and compliance reviews to verify adherence to safety procedures and standards. Identify safety gaps, prioritize risks, and drive corrective and preventive actions with clear accountability and follow-through. Deliver safety training programs to field and yard personnel, ensuring understanding and consistent application of safety procedures. Enforce safety training requirements and verify that workers maintain required certifications and credentials. Promote a culture of accountability, ownership, and proactive hazard identification at all levels of the organization. Partner with leadership to reinforce safety as a core operational expectation and integrate safety into daily planning and execution. Lead investigations into incidents, near misses, and safety events, ensuring thorough documentation and reporting. Conduct root cause analyses and oversee implementation of corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence. Interface directly with general contractors, site safety managers, and regulatory bodies to align on safety expectations and performance. Represent the organization in client safety meetings, audits, and reviews, communicating safety performance and initiatives. Oversee safety related to rigging and hoisting operations, including planning, execution, and monitoring of critical lifts. Manage dropped object prevention programs ("Stop the Drop") and ensure controls are in place for elevated work activities. Oversee safety for tie-ins, anchors, structural connections, sidewalk sheds, bridges, and public protection systems. Coordinate safety efforts across multiple job sites, ensuring consistent application of standards and practices. Travel frequently to job sites across NYC and NJ to provide hands-on support, coaching, and leadership in the field. Essential Skills 7-10+ years of experience in commercial construction safety, with a strong preference for scaffold, access, and hoist operations and high-rise construction in NYC. Strong working knowledge of NYC DOB Chapter 33 and FDNY regulations as they relate to construction and public protection. In-depth understanding of OSHA regulations applicable to construction, including fall protection, scaffolding, hoisting, and access systems. Practical experience with rigging and hoisting safety practices, including planning and oversight of high-risk activities. Proven ability to lead in the field, influence crews and supervisors, and enforce safety standards consistently. Experience working in union environments and familiarity with unionized construction operations. Current OSHA 30 for Construction certification (required). Current NYC DOB 62-hour Site Safety Training (SST) card (required). CPR and First Aid training and certification. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, enabling effective communication with diverse field teams. Willingness to travel locally, with approximately 75% or more of time spent in the field across NYC and NJ. Ability to conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analyses and to implement corrective actions effectively. Strong communication skills to engage with general contractors, site safety managers, and regulatory representatives. Ability to develop and deliver safety training tailored to field and yard personnel. Additional Skills & Qualifications Additional safety-related certifications beyond OSHA 30 and the NYC DOB 62-hour SST card are preferred. Experience representing an organization in client safety meetings and external audits. Background in industrial, commercial, or infrastructure projects involving access, scaffolding, and hoisting solutions. Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a proactive safety culture focused on hazard identification and risk reduction. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple job sites and safety initiatives concurrently. Ability to collaborate closely with engineering and operations teams on planning, design, and execution of safe work methods. Comfort working within a large, multi-site organization that delivers industrial and commercial service solutions. Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills are highly valuable for training and field leadership. Work Environment The EHS Manager works primarily in the field, with approximately 75% of time spent traveling to and from job sites across NYC and NJ. The role is embedded in active commercial and high-rise construction environments that involve scaffolding, hoisting, suspended access systems, sidewalk sheds, and public protection structures. Work takes place in outdoor and partially enclosed settings, often at height and in varying weather conditions, alongside field crews, supervisors, and project stakeholders. The position requires frequent on-site presence to conduct inspections, audits, training, and incident investigations, as well as participation in client and regulatory meetings.
