Job Title:
Safety Manager Job Description The Safety Manager leads safety programs across multiple projects and business units within an industrial construction environment. This role manages a safety team, oversees safety inspections and training, ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, and serves as a technical resource and key partner to project teams and subcontractors. The Safety Manager plays a critical role in shaping a strong safety culture, driving continuous improvement, and supporting a large-scale expansion project. Responsibilities Manage safety department team members, including assigning workloads based on project volume and needs, overseeing additional departmental responsibilities, and making staffing recommendations. Conduct regular check-ins and annual performance evaluations for all direct reports, providing feedback and coaching to support their professional growth. Assess training and learning needs for direct reports and ensure they receive appropriate development opportunities. Train and support safety department members as needed, acting as a mentor and technical resource. Review career path goals with team members and provide guidance on career development within the safety function. Participate in the retention and recruiting of safety department team members to build and maintain a strong safety organization. Manage outside safety consultants, including project needs, performance expectations, and deliverables. Determine and fulfill the safety needs of multiple projects and business units, ensuring adequate coverage and support. Evaluate the inspection performance of other safety department members and project team members, and provide feedback and coaching. Conduct on-site safety inspections independently using the Predictive Solutions system. Evaluate hazard and incident data to identify trends and create focus on specific project and corporate safety needs. Set safety inspection criteria and expectations, and measure and evaluate performance against those standards. Mentor operations and site operations teams in the safety inspection process to strengthen field-level safety practices. Evaluate project compliance with federal, state, local, corporate, and client safety regulations and procedures. Identify and address safety needs and challenges associated with future project work, including new scopes or conditions. Evaluate and address safety performance of subcontractors working on projects, and provide guidance or corrective actions as needed. Review project safety inspections with site operations and project teams to ensure findings are understood and addressed. Regularly analyze and interpret inspection and incident data to identify safety trends at the business unit level and make recommendations to address them. Distribute project safety inspection reports to key project team members and subcontractors, ensuring timely communication of findings. Prepare and distribute open issue summaries and evaluations for projects and business units, tracking resolution of safety items. Research and evaluate current and future OSHA regulations to ensure projects remain compliant and prepared for regulatory changes. Conduct or coordinate third-party safety inspections independently when needed. Lead crisis or accident and incident response and investigations independently, including root cause analysis and corrective actions. Develop, select, and deliver safety toolbox talks and project safety orientations effectively to diverse audiences. Evaluate and coach others on the delivery of toolbox talks and safety orientations to improve engagement and effectiveness. Enforce safety requirements with both general contractor and subcontractor workforce and supervision on-site. Evaluate project safety policies for effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement. Deliver just-in-time on-site safety training tailored to emerging risks or project needs. Review and develop job hazard analyses for common and complex tasks independently, ensuring they address key risks and controls. Assist with safety planning as part of the preconstruction process to ensure safety is integrated into project planning. Lead selected subcontractor safety preconstruction meetings and address special needs for site-specific safety plans. Participate in project safety and subcontractor meetings as needed to represent the safety function and provide guidance. Develop project safety orientations that address special client requirements or unique site conditions. Elevate safety concerns appropriately to leadership or other stakeholders when necessary. Audit the use of project safety signage and provide recommendations to improve visibility and effectiveness. Audit and review project safety documentation requirements and implement improvements as needed. Research and gather information to resolve safety-related issues independently, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills. Identify or select special safety and protective equipment for projects independently, based on specific hazards or conditions. Collaborate with project teams to plan and execute project-wide safety stand-downs when needed. Identify and arrange specific safety training to meet project or business unit needs, including specialized topics. Serve as a technical resource to all members of the safety department and site operations, providing guidance on safety standards and best practices. Evaluate safety inspection processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, and effectiveness. Develop and lead the execution of corporate-level safety department goals. Develop safety goals for individual business units and support their implementation. Conduct and develop in-house safety training programs for employees and project teams. Identify corporate safety and protective equipment needs and support procurement decisions. Research and trial new safety-related products to enhance safety performance and innovation. Prepare monthly safety summaries for assigned business units, highlighting key trends, issues, and achievements. Act as the primary point of contact for safety processes such as Predictive Solutions and Toolbox Talks within the safety department. Participate in corporate initiatives and committees outside of safety, contributing a safety perspective to broader organizational efforts. Create and maintain positive working relationships with project teams and subcontractors to foster collaboration and trust around safety. Respond to safety concerns raised by clients, tenants, or impacted members of the public in a timely and professional manner. Assist and collaborate with other parts of the corporate risk management team as needed. Participate in safety and construction professional organization meetings to stay current with industry best practices and emerging trends. Essential Skills Strong experience managing safety programs in an industrial construction environment. Proven ability to lead and develop safety teams, including performance management, coaching, and mentoring. Demonstrated experience conducting on-site safety inspections and using systems such as Predictive Solutions. Ability to analyze hazard, inspection, and incident data to identify trends and develop targeted safety initiatives. Thorough knowledge of federal, state, local, corporate, and client safety regulations and procedures. Experience evaluating subcontractor safety performance and enforcing safety requirements on complex projects. Strong skills in developing and delivering safety toolbox talks, orientations, and just-in-time training. Ability to develop and review job hazard analyses for common and complex tasks. Experience leading crisis or accident and incident response and investigations, including root cause analysis. Capability to research and interpret OSHA regulations and apply them to project and corporate safety programs. Proficiency in developing and implementing safety policies, inspection criteria, and performance metrics. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently resolve safety-related issues. Effective communication and relationship-building skills with project teams, subcontractors, clients, and other stakeholders. Ability to serve as a technical safety resource to operations and safety department members. OSHA 30-Hour for Construction certification. First Aid and CPR certification. CHST, CSP, or equivalent professional safety designation. Bachelor's degree in safety or a related field preferred. Additional Skills & QualificationsOSHA 500
certification preferred. Experience with EM 385 and construction safety standards. Familiarity with Predictive Solutions or similar safety inspection and data management tools. Experience developing corporate-level and business unit safety goals and initiatives. Background in conducting in-house safety training programs for various levels of staff. Experience researching and trialing new safety-related products and technologies. Participation in safety and construction professional organizations or industry groups. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with corporate risk management teams. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects, inspections, and reporting responsibilities. Ability to adapt safety programs to address special client requirements or unique site conditions. Work Environment This role operates within an industrial construction environment, supporting a large-scale expansion project with significant scope and complexity. The Safety Manager regularly visits active construction sites, conducts field inspections, and collaborates closely with site operations, project teams, and subcontractors. The work involves exposure to typical construction conditions, including outdoor work, varying weather, active equipment, and ongoing construction activities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Daniel Island, SC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $55.00/hr.
