Job Description

The HSS Manager serves as the on-site subject matter expert and leader for all health, safety, security, and environmental programs at our retail fulfillment center. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs that protect team members, reduce incidents, ensure OSHA compliance, and promote a proactive safety culture. You'll work collaboratively with operations management, HR, and cross-functional teams to identify hazards, mitigate risks, lead incident investigations, deliver training, and drive continuous improvement in safety performance. Success in this role requires strong leadership presence on the floor, data-driven decision-making, and the ability to influence at all levels of the organization. Safety Program Leadership Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive health and safety programs for the fulfillment center Lead daily safety walks, audits, and inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards Establish and maintain safety policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) Drive continuous improvement in safety metrics including incident rates, near-miss reporting, and leading indicators Partner with operations leadership to integrate safety into daily production activities and decision-making Lead safety committees and engage team members in safety initiatives and problem-solving Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management Ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations, state and local safety requirements, and company safety standards Manage OSHA recordkeeping including 300 logs, incident reporting, and required postings Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses for all fulfillment center operations Develop and maintain emergency action plans, evacuation procedures, and crisis response protocols Serve as primary contact for OSHA inspections, workers' compensation audits, and regulatory visits Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental health and safety regulations Incident Management & Investigation Lead investigations of workplace injuries, illnesses, near-misses, and property damage incidents Conduct thorough root cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive actions Manage workers' compensation claims process and coordinate with HR, medical providers, and insurance carriers Track injured employees through return-to-work programs and modified duty assignments Analyze incident trends and develop targeted interventions to prevent recurrence Prepare incident reports, metrics, and presentations for site and corporate leadership Training & Development Design and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all team members including new hire orientation Provide specialized training on topics such as forklift operation, powered industrial trucks (PIT), lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, ergonomics, and hazard communication Develop and maintain training materials, job aids, and visual safety communications Certify and re-certify team members on required safety competencies and equipment operation Coach and mentor operations supervisors and managers on safety leadership and accountability Conduct refresher training and toolbox talks on emerging safety topics Security & Asset Protection Oversee physical security programs including access control, CCTV monitoring, and visitor management Develop and implement security policies and procedures to protect people, property, and inventory Coordinate with corporate security and local law enforcement as needed Investigate security incidents, thefts, and workplace violence concerns Manage contractor safety orientation and compliance for vendors and service providers Emergency Preparedness Develop and maintain emergency response plans for fire, severe weather, medical emergencies, and other crisis situations Coordinate emergency drills and exercises including evacuation, shelter-in-place, and active threat scenarios Train and equip emergency response teams including first aid/CPR, AED, fire brigade, and incident command Ensure emergency equipment (fire extinguishers, AEDs, eyewash stations, first aid supplies) is inspected and maintained Serve as incident commander during emergency situations Metrics, Reporting & Continuous Improvement Track, analyze, and report safety metrics including TRIR, DART, severity rates, near-miss frequency, and leading indicators Develop dashboards and visual management tools to communicate safety performance Conduct safety performance reviews with operations leadership and recommend improvement actions Benchmark best practices from other facilities and implement innovative safety solutions Lead kaizen events and continuous improvement projects focused on safety and risk reduction Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual safety reports for site and corporate leadership
Qualifications:
Education Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field required Equivalent combination of education and experience considered Experience Minimum 5-7 years of progressive safety management experience in distribution, warehousing, manufacturing, or logistics operations 3+ years in a leadership or site-level HSS management role Experience in high-volume fulfillment center, e-commerce, or retail distribution environment preferred Proven track record reducing incident rates and improving safety culture Experience managing OSHA compliance programs and regulatory inspections
Licenses & Certifications Required:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or equivalent professional safety certification Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification
Preferred:
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist (CEAS) Forklift/PIT trainer certification

training Six Sigma or Lean certification
Work Environment:
This position is located in an active industrial manufacturing and distribution center with moderate to high noise levels, temperature variations, and material handling equipment in operation. The role may require extended periods of standing or walking on concrete floors and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and steel-toed boots. The fast-paced environment involves time-sensitive and safety sensitive operations and may include various shift schedules to support production and distribution needs.
