Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
As an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist, you will serve as the organization's champion for safety culture and environmental stewardship. Operating within Broomfield, Colorado, this role carries expanded regulatory obligations under Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) frameworks, OSHA federal standards, and applicable NFPA codes. Your responsibilities span risk assessment, regulatory compliance, sustainability, water waste monitoring and reporting, fire and combustible dust hazard analysis at dust collection points, and integrated pest management oversight. This role is highly integrated with daily manufacturing operations, supporting environments that include personal care, food, and dietary supplement production under one roof. The EHS Specialist partners closely with Quality, Operations, and Maintenance teams to ensure safety, environmental compliance, and regulatory alignment are embedded into routine production activities, process design, and continuous improvement efforts. RequirementsWHAT YOU BRING
(MINIMUMJOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
) Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field preferred Minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar EHS role, showcasing exceptional safety leadership and regulatory knowledge. Safety Management experience in a Manufacturing environment highly preferred. Strong understanding of environmental sustainability practices and waste management strategies. Working knowledge of Colorado-specific environmental regulations including CDPHE's Colorado Discharge Permit System (CDPS), Water Quality Control Act, and Air Quality Control Commission Regulations. Familiarity with NFPA 652 andNFPA 654
combustible dust standards, including Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) requirements. Experience in collaborating with operations in conducting Job Hazards Analyses (JHAs). Excellent communication skills to engage and influence employees at all levels. Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and identify areas for improvement. Professional certifications in safety (e.g., CSP, OSHA 511) management are required. Familiarity withISO 14001
Environmental Management Systems and/orISO 45001
Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems. Working knowledge of FDA regulations, current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), and Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements. Experience supporting industrial hygiene monitoring programs, including exposure assessments for powders, fragrances, chemicals, and occupational noise. Demonstrated experience in ergonomics, material handling risk assessment, and injury prevention programs in manufacturing environments.WHAT YOU'LL DO
(ESSENTIALJOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
)Safety Leadership:
Drive the organization's safety culture, ensuring safety is fully embedded into day-to-day operations, production activities, and continuous improvement initiatives. Partner closely with Operations, Quality, and Maintenance to proactively identify and mitigate risk at the point of execution.Risk Assessment:
Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards, proactively addressing them to prevent incidents.Machine Safety & Energy Control:
Maintain ownership of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, and equipment safety programs, partnering with Operations and Engineering to ensure compliance with OSHA standards.Combustible Dust & Fire Hazard Assessment:
Conduct and maintain Dust Hazard Analyses (DHAs) at dust collection points in accordance with NFPA 652/654 and OSHA's Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program. Maintain documentation and coordinate with corrective actions with facilities and maintenance teams.Regulatory Compliance:
Maintain current knowledge of and ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations, including: FederalOSHA 29 CFR 1910
(General Industry) standards. Colorado OSHA (Division of Labor Standards and Statistics) regulations. CDPHE Air Quality Control Commission Regulations. Colorado Water Quality Control Act and CDPS industrial stormwater permit requirements. Broomfield municipal environmental ordinances and permitting requirements. FDA cGMP (21 CFR Part 111/117) requirements for dietary supplements and food manufacturing. Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) preventive controls as they relate to facility, process, and environmental conditions. Alignment of EHS programs with Quality systems to ensure integrated compliance across safety, food safety, and product integrity.Training and Education:
Outline and facilitate engaging safety and environmental training programs to empower our team with knowledge and best practices. Collaborate with Learning & Development teams for formalized compliance training, tracking and delivery.Ergonomics & Injury Prevention:
Lead ergonomic risk assessments and implement controls to reduce repetitive motion injuries, lifting hazards, and material handling risks, partnering with Operations and Engineering to improve workstation design and workflow efficiency.Incident Management:
Lead incident investigations with precision, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. MaintainOSHA 300/300A
logs and manage required CDPHE incident reporting as applicable.Chemical Safety & GHS:
Oversee chemical safety programs including SDS management, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) labeling, and work with L&D to develop employee training ensuring safe handling of raw materials and cleaning chemicals.Waste Management:
Spearhead our waste reduction and recycling programs, optimizing resource utilization and minimizing our environmental footprint.Emergency Preparedness:
Create and maintain emergency response plans compliant withOSHA 29 CFR
1910.38 and Colorado's Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) obligations. Ensure coordination with Broomfield Emergency Management and applicable Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs).Environmental Monitoring:
Conduct environmental assessments and implement measures to safeguard our ecosystems and natural resources.Water Waste Monitoring and Reporting:
Oversee all aspects of the facility's water waste compliance program in accordance with the Colorado Discharge Permit System (CDPS) and Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. § 1251 et seq.) Responsibilities may include: Conducting and documenting routine stormwater discharge inspections and pollutant monitoring in compliance withCOR9000000
permit conditions. Tracking and reporting water usage and wastewater discharge volumes as part of the facility's sustainability and environmental footprint program. Coordinating with CDPHE's Quality Control Division for any permit modifications, renewals, or violation response actions.Sustainability Initiatives:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement sustainable practices, driving us towards our eco-friendly vision.Data Analysis:
