Location of Workplace Main UNCW Campus Brief Summary of Work for this Position This position supports compliance and risk reduction efforts by applying safety principles and regulatory knowledge to University operations and activities and effectively communicating requirements and best practices to the campus community. Specific and focused work is in the laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental management areas, and includes such tasks as laboratory facility and safety equipment inspection; radiation area and x-ray equipment audits; regulated waste collection, classification and consolidation; personal exposure monitoring and environmental sampling; and other safety program activities. The position coordinates with Facilities and vendors to recommend and monitor contractor work with laboratory ventilation systems and uses the asset management system to document inspection, preventative maintenance, and repair activities. The position also provides occasional assistance to other departmental functions, including occupational safety, fire safety, and emergency management efforts as needed and represents the department at training, exercises, and tabling events. This is a mandatory position and must respond during emergencies. Excellent customer service skills and a collaborative approach are essential. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma and demonstrated competence necessary to perform the work. Preferred education, professional skills and experience Bachelors degree in a related scientific or technical field, or equivalent experience, is preferred. The ability to attain technical skills and understanding necessary to operate and troubleshoot a variety of survey instruments, sampling devices and tools is required. Proficiency in general computer and office software is essential, as well as the ability to learn specialized database and information packages. A working knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations relating to safety and environmental compliance and a basic understanding of chemical properties and hazards is needed.
