Job Summary SMSI is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist to support our client onsite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Under direct supervision, this role will help promote and maintain a safe, healthy work environment through the administration and implementation of the Industrial Safety Program. The Health and Safety Specialist will work closely with management to provide daily guidance and support to plant personnel and contractors, ensuring compliance with established industrial safety requirements, policies, and procedures. The ideal candidate will have experience in construction health and safety, which is highly preferred for this position. Responsibilities Establish and maintain strong working relationships with site personnel to identify, evaluate, and control potential workplace hazards. Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) to ensure hazards are properly identified and appropriate engineering and administrative controls are implemented. Attend daily pre-job briefings for construction activities and provide safety guidance as needed. Maintain regular communication with site management and contractors to ensure appropriate safety coverage is provided during off-shift operations. Assist with inspections, analyses, and evaluations of planned work, plant facilities, contractor activities, materials, equipment, and other conditions to identify potential accident hazards. Apply applicable state and federal safety regulations in day-to-day site oversight and operations. Ensure site compliance with industrial safety requirements and exercise full stop-work authority when an activity violates, or has the potential to violate, established safety requirements. Participate in safety-related projects and other assignments as directed. Required Skills/ Abilities Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with management, employees, contractors, and other site personnel. Ability to conduct safety inspections, identify deficiencies, and recommend appropriate corrective actions. Ability to effectively communicate safety expectations and provide guidance to personnel at all levels. Must possess and maintain an active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) "Q" security clearance. Candidate must be a US citizen. Desired Skills Previous experience supporting the Department of Energy (DOE) is preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in Safety and Health, preferably within the construction industry. Certified Safety Professional® (CSP®) certification or an equivalent nationally recognized safety credential is required. Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field with eight (8) or more years of experience in the construction industry Education Associate's degree in Industrial Safety, Occupational Safety, Occupational Health, or a related field; equivalent education and/or relevant experience may be considered.
