The Environmental Safety Technician supports the District's environmental health, safety, and regulatory compliance efforts across school facilities. This position assists with environmental inspections, indoor environmental quality monitoring, hazardous material management, and regulatory compliance related to asbestos, lead-based paint, and other environmental hazards. The Environmental Safety Technician serves as the District's technical resource and point of contact for environmental safety documentation and regulatory reporting related to asbestos, lead-based paint, hazardous materials, and indoor environmental quality. The position coordinates required inspections, documentation, and compliance activities while working under the direction of the Paint Foreperson and Operations leadership. This position does not supervise staff. Essential Functions:
Environmental Compliance and Safety o Assist with the implementation and monitoring of environmental compliance programs for District facilities. o Inspect facilities and work areas to identify potential environmental or safety hazards. o Collect samples of hazardous materials such as asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, dust, gases, vapors, and other potentially hazardous materials, or coordinate sample collection with qualified vendors. o Assist with coordination of asbestos and lead abatement projects with District personnel, consultants, and contractors. o Support environmental safety audits and investigations of District buildings and operations. o Maintain records, reports, and documentation related to environmental compliance activities. o Assist in maintaining hazardous material inventories and waste tracking systems. o Respond to environmental safety concerns and assist with remediation efforts when hazardous conditions are identified. o Assist in maintaining emergency response plans related to environmental hazards. o Monitor compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations and District policies. Indoor Environmental Quality o Assist with monitoring indoor air quality in District facilities. o Support implementation of EPA indoor air quality programs, including Tools for Schools. o Conduct facility inspections to identify potential contributors to poor indoor air quality. o Assist in responding to indoor air quality concerns or complaints from staff or students. Safety and Training o Assist in the development and delivery of safety training programs for operations staff. o Conduct safety education sessions related to hazardous materials and workplace safety practices. o Maintain records of staff training and safety compliance activities. o Support new employee safety orientations within the Operations Department. Facilities Support o Generate work orders for facility deficiencies identified during inspections. o Assist with vendor coordination for hazardous material removal, waste disposal, and recycling services. o Assist with small-scale asbestos and lead encapsulation or remediation projects as permitted by certification. o Assist the Paint Department with painting and coating projects, including surface preparation, drywall repair, and finishing work as needed. o Perform minor repairs related to plaster, drywall, flooring, and similar building materials. Organizational Responsibilities o Communicate professionally with District staff, administrators, contractors, and the public. o Maintain a positive and professional work environment. o Participate in departmental meetings and planning sessions. o Maintain accurate records and documentation related to assigned duties. o Complete assigned projects within established timelines. o Perform additional duties as assigned to support the operations of the Maintenance Department. Reports to the Paint Foreman Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of environmental safety regulations and compliance requirements. Knowledge of hazardous material handling and safety procedures. Ability to read and interpret building plans, technical documents, and regulatory standards. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively. Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills. Ability to interact professionally with District staff, contractors, and regulatory agencies. Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Safety, Environmental Science, Applied Sciences, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered. Minimum of three (3) years experience supporting environmental health, safety, or indoor environmental quality programs. Experience working in facilities maintenance, construction, or environmental compliance environments preferred. Experience assisting with safety training or compliance activities preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) certification including: o Asbestos Inspection o Management Planning o Project Supervision Mold remediation certification preferred. HAZMAT training preferred. Valid Wisconsin Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Must complete required district safety training within twelve (12) months of employment, including but not limited to Bloodborne Pathogens, Mandatory Reporting, Asbestos Awareness, ALICE, and other required training.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a busy facilities environment with multiple priorities and interruptions. The position requires travel between District sites and may include exposure to construction sites, mechanical rooms, hazardous materials, and environmental hazards. The position may occasionally require evening or weekend work depending on project schedules or emergency response needs.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 150 pounds. Ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces when necessary. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment when required.
