As a Building Security Attendant with Oakland County, you'll play an important role in helping protect County facilities, employees, and visitors. This position is ideal for someone who is dependable, observant, and comfortable working independently while staying alert to potential safety or security concerns. No two shifts are exactly the same, and your attention to detail will help ensure County buildings remain secure and operational around the clock. What You'll Do
  • Monitor and patrol assigned County-owned or operated buildings and surrounding areas
  • Check for signs of unauthorized entry, safety concerns, fire hazards, or other security risks
  • Report incidents, concerns, or emergency situations to the appropriate authorities in a timely manner
  • Maintain a visible presence to help ensure building safety and security
  • Complete routine security checks and document findings as needed
  • Utilize Countywide and department-specific software systems to complete assignments and maintain records
  • Respond to emergency situations and assist with coverage needs as required
  • Work rotating schedules that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and relief coverage on other shifts

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test. Have at least one (1) year of experience as a Building Safety Attendant. Possess and maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operators. Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law. In general, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatically disqualifying). Must be able to pass iChat and Oakland County Sheriff's Office clearance check.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May function as a leader over a small group of non-supervisory safety employees when assigned by the Building Safety Leader, Supervisor, or Chief.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs the duties of absent, Building Safety Leader, to ensure that all assigned areas of County buildings are secure, and staff are covering assigned work areas. Contact County maintenance staff when damage to County buildings or property and safety or fire hazards have been detected to ensure that appropriate repairs are made, or corrective action taken. Responds to and supervises response to emergency calls in case of illness, injury, disorderly conduct, or other conditions affecting the regular operations of the various County departments, law enforcement or fire department; may involve performance of emergency first aid, first response firefighting activities until the arrival of local firefighting units. Maintains a security watch in County protected buildings during non-business hours. Patrols an assigned building according to an established schedule, checking for fire, fire hazards, unauthorized persons, theft, and safety hazards. Records observation and notifies proper authorities as necessary. Scans security check points/stations. Closes doors, windows and turns off lights, appliances, and power when not in use. Checks signs indicating unauthorized entry of buildings or offices. Operates the information desk, clearing and signing people in and out of the building after regular hours. Assists the public entering the building after hours with directions or information. Checks the identification of persons who are removing machines, files, tapes, and other items out of the building to confirm that they are authorized to do so. Records the identity of persons removing the items and the type of items being removed. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Receives radio and telephone calls for contacting fire departments and dispatches the appropriate fire department for emergencies, calls ambulances and hospitals when appropriate to relay the information for assistance.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate and use basic motor skills when checking/observing buildings for safety regulations. Ability to notify public service individuals in the event of an emergency. Ability to walk extensively through large buildings and climb stairs. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or be a passenger.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in variable weather conditions, confined spaces, and areas of loud noises. May be exposed to machinery and equipment that could affect health conditions. May participate in activities that require driving or being a passenger in an automobile or bus.

Some supervisory experience preferred. Reasonable ability to make decisions under sudden or adverse conditions. Reasonable ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks. Reasonable ability to follow written or oral directions. Reasonable ability to use and maintain items of clothing and equipment issued by the County. Reasonable ability to recognize problems and departures from routine leading to hazardous situations, both physical and interpersonal.
