Job Description

About Us Washington Regional Medical Center is a 25-be Critical Access Hospital serving more than 45,000 people across roughly 300 square miles of rural eastern North Carolina. We are the only hospital our community has, and the people who work here understand what that means. Patients, visitors, and staff rely on us to keep the building calm, safe and welcoming around the clock. The Role We are hiring Unarmed Security Officers who want a real career path, not just a shift. You will start unarmed, learn our facility and our patients inside and out, and - once you have demonstrated sound judgment and meet North Carolina's eligibility requirements - move into our armed officer rotation with the training paid for by the hospital. This is hospital security, which is its own discipline. The work is less about confrontation and more about presence, de-escalation, and helping people on what is often the worst day of their lives. We need officers who can stand quietly in an Emergency Department lobby at 2 a.m. and read a room, who can walk a frightened family member to their car, and who can write a clean incident report when something does happen. What You'll Do Patrol hospital grounds, parking lots, and the Emergency Department on a regular schedule Monitor access points, surveillance systems, and alarm panels Respond to Code Gray (combative person), Code Pink (infant security) and other facility-wide codes per policy Support clinical staff with violent or impaired patients, including assisting with restraints when directed by clinical staff Enforce visitor policies, lockdown procedures, and chain-of-custody for evidence and patient belongings Document incidents accurately and on time Maintain a calm, professional, customer-service-oriented presence with patients and families Required Qualifications At least 18 years of age High School Diploma or GED Valid North Carolina driver's license and clean driving record Successful completion (or willingness to complete during the probationary period) of the NC PPSB 16-hour Unarmed Security Guard Training Course Ability to pass state and federal criminal background checks and fingerprinting per NCGS Chapter 74C Physically able to stand, walk and respond rapidly throughout a 12-hour shift Preferred Qualifications Prior military service (any branch, honorable discharge) or prior law enforcement/corrections experience Healthcare, EMS, or behavioral health background CPR/BLS certification Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or comparable de-escalation training Eligibility to advance to NC PPSB armed registration at age 21 or older The Armed Officer Track Officers who perform well during their first 6-12 months and meet PPSB armed eligibility (age 21+, clean record, concealed carry permit eligibility) will be sponsored by WRMC for the NC PPSB 20-hour Armed Security Guard Training Course and firearms qualification. WRMC covers training tuition, range fees, and registration costs for officers we promote internally. We would rather grow our armed staff from people who already know our halls than hire strangers. Compensation & Benefits Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience, with a pay step at the time of armed certification. Full-time officers receive medical, dental, vision, paid time off, holiday pay eligibility per WRMC policy. Applicants are encouraged to apply through Indeed with a current resume. Veterans and former law enforcement are strongly encouraged to apply. Washington Regional Medical Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Application Question(s): Are you available to work nights, weekends, holidays?
