Job Description
Job Summary Duties Description The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Facilities and Business Services is seeking (2) candidates for a Security Officer position within the Education Building (EB). Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Understand, operate, and monitor security devices and alarm monitoring systems;
- Work closely with executive staff and external law enforcement, fire, and emergency services to respond to security and emergency incidents;
- Monitor entrances and exits of buildings to ensure security and to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering or remaining in the building;
- Approach and intercede with trespassers, unruly clients, and suspicious activities;
- Patrol and monitor the Education Building, inspecting premises for hazardous conditions and activities;
- Provide directional information to visitors;
- Prepare reports documenting and detailing activities and incidents; and
- Follow and enforce NYSED policies for staff and patrons Minimum Qualifications
NY HELPS
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of theNY HELPS
Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired underNY HELPS
will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in aNY HELPS
title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- 1. Six months of post-Security Guard Registration experience as a Security Guard; OR

Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Security Officer.Eligible List Appointment:
Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. If you are on the Civil Service eligible list for this title, you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter. Section 70.1Transfer:
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in any of the following titles: Community Correctional Center Assistant, Correction Officer, or Security Services Assistant 1. Section 70.4 Transfer toSecurity Officer:
Candidates may be eligible for nomination for transfer under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law to Security Officer if they are a current NYS employee with one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a titleSALARY GRADE
6 or higher AND have standing on the Security Officer eligible list AND possess:- Six months of post-Security Guard Registration experience as a Security Guard; OR
- 2. Six months of experience as a police officer or peace officer; OR
- 3.
Appointment:
This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply. Candidates must possess a current 55b/c eligibility letter and meet the minimum qualifications. It is essential that candidates clearly and concisely indicate exactly how they meet the above minimum qualifications in their resume. Failure to show how you meet the minimum qualifications above may result in disqualification and removal from consideration. Internal SED candidates bidding to change their current shift should indicate their preferred shifts in order from most preferred to least when submitting their applications. Shifts will be awarded based on seniority as outlined in the NYSCOBA contract. If current staff bid to change shifts, their current shift assignment will be backfilled. For 55b/c appointment, candidates must possess the minimum qualifications, a current 55b/c eligibility letter and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Promotions and transfers may change appointees' negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Candidates are required to possess a New York State Security Guard license at the time of hire. Continued employment as a Security Officer is dependent upon maintaining a New York State Security Guard license. Failure to maintain a New York State Security Guard license will result in removal from employment. The work schedule for this position may be as follows:- Monday-Friday, 1:45pm-10:00pm (includes a 15-minute pre-shift briefing)
- Monday-Friday, 5:45am-2:00pm (includes a 15-minute pre-shift briefing) An evaluation of your physical and medical condition will be done to ensure that you are able to perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.
