Posting Details Posting Detail Information Student Requisition Number 2027095STP Job Title Student Security Officer Number of Positions Available 5 Funded by Federal Workstudy only No Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities The Student Security Officers division of the University Police Department is under the direction of the University Police Department and Chief of Police or designee. Student Security officers serve in a complementary role to our police officers and are non-sworn civilian officers. They do not carry weapons, and have not attended the West Virginia State Police Academy. Student Security officers may provide initial support and then quickly notify additional police and emergency staff, during emergency situations. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Patrols assigned area on foot, to ensure personal, building, and equipment security. 2. Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses University keys to open and close buildings; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities. 3. Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles. 4. Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information. 5. Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required. 6. Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or policy code violators; observes suspicious persons and notifies police as appropriate; maintain observation until police arrive. 7. Performs periodic checks of exterior lighting and/or street lights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required. 8. May provide safe and efficient passage to university employees and/or visitors, as requested. 9. Provides traffic control and security related duties during campus events 10. Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas and/or parking garages to provide public security and assistance. 11. Maintains security controls for issued University keys; safeguards and controls issued University equipment. 12. Prepares routine, standardized reports. 13. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. 14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
  • No previous experience or minimum education required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or state identification card is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

  • Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete routine paperwork.

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in performing building security and lock procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies, and regulations.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures.
