Job Description
- Develop an understanding of the Montessori philosophy. If you are teaching in a Montessori classroom you shall perform all educational duties according to the Montessori philosophy and method. Non-Montessori teachers shall perform all educational duties according to program plans and generally accepted practices appropriate for age level.
- You must dress neatly and in good taste.
- You should be punctual, dependable, tactful, discrete, and helpful.
- You should be responsive to the children and to their parents, retaining your poise at all times.
- You are expected to treat all information regarding children, parents, staff, etc with strict confidence and to avoid gossip at all times.
- Let parents know you take pride in your work-and conduct yourself in a way that conveys this attitude through the care with which you undertake all your daily activities.
- Set up meeting with new parents to explain classroom and answer questions.
- Maintain open, friendly, and cooperative relationships with each child's family and encourage their involvement in the program.
- Be responsible for planning and implementing daily activities being sure to include all areas - math, language, art, science, fine and gross motor, music, group time, etc.
- Be able to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet students varying needs and interests.
- Take prompt, positive, and helpful action with children who:
- Misuse materials.
- Show lack of respect for other children or adults.
- Need assistance in eating or with personal belongings.
- Need love, affection, reassurance, or other individual attention.
- Provide assistance and patience for new and/or transitioning children.
- Be responsible for maintaining order among children in a positive manner.
- Interact with children in a way that conveys respect and nurturing.
- Greet all children and parents with a smile when they arrive and help them to become involved. Say good- bye as they leave for the day.
- Assist with lunch, snack, naps, toileting/diapers, and all activities done by the children.
- Apply sunscreen to children as needed.
- Be responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of the classroom, materials and break room.
- Take proper care when/if a child becomes ill.
- Inform Director/Assistant Director when supplies are needed.
- Decorate classroom to make it a pleasing and inviting space for children and parents.
- Write newsletter every 6 weeks.
- Report to Director/Assistant Director and needs, problems or concerns from or about children and/or parents.
- Maintain health regulations for staff and children.
- Complete reports and evaluations to be able to give accurate conferences two times a year.
- Research and create materials for children with special needs as necessary.
- Work cooperatively and effectively as a team member. Keep lines of communication open. Be respectful of each other.
- Complete 24 hours a year in-service as required by law.
- Current CPR and first aid.
- Report any cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to Social Services as per MN statue.
- Any other jobs/duties that are assigned to you by the Director or Assistant Director. Assistant Teachers are under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director and must qualify as an Assistant under the guidelines of the State of MN Rule 3. The duties of an Assistant Teacher include, but are not limited to the following:

- Any other jobs/duties that are assigned to you by the Lead Teacher, Director or Assistant Director. Physical demands of both positions include:
- You will be required to lift/push/carry/pull up to 30 pounds frequently, rarely up to 50 pounds.
- You must frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch.
- You must be able to sit on the floor/ground frequently.
- You must be able to be outside in cold or hot weather.
