Non- Exempt The Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Library Support Staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine library support services, including the circulation and retrieval of library materials, assisting patrons with accessing and use of library resources, and answering basic reference questions. As increased knowledge and skill are achieved, assignments are carried out with greater independence within established guidelines.PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(Illustrative Only) Performs basic public desk functions at library service desks and mobile points of service. Checks library materials in and out utilizing computerized systems; empties book drops; shelves materials. Provides routine clerical and technical support to ensure the timely delivery of information and materials to library patrons. Provides basic reference and reader's advisory assistance to the public. Assists patrons with the location and use of library resources and equipment. Explains library circulation policies and procedures to patrons and maintains accurate patron account information. Calculates and collects fines and other charges for overdue, lost, or damaged books; records and balances daily receipts. Troubleshoots basic hardware and software issues, including print management, microform, and photocopy machines. Issues and updates library cards. Renews materials and places holds on requested items. Trains patrons in the use of library catalog and available online resources. May assist with and perform library branch opening and closing duties. May assist with preparation and delivery of library programs and instruction.QUALIFICATIONS
Education Requirements:
Possession of 30 semester units/45 quarter units from an accredited college or university. Library experience is desirable.Other Requirements:
Must be willing to work evenings and weekends. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including walking, reaching above head, bending to floor level, standing continuously without a break for two-hour periods, and lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.Knowledge of:
General municipal library services, organization, and functions; Basic public desk etiquette and customer services skills, as well as methods of providing information in a variety of situations with a diverse customer population; Basic business arithmetic; Basic office practices and procedure; Standard office equipment, including the use of computers and automation software; and Basic business English.Skill in:
Performing paraprofessional search and retrieval work using a variety of technologies; Making accurate arithmetic computations to determine library overdue fees, cash balances, and related tasks; Answering questions and determining when to refer complex queries to full-time staff; Following oral and written directions while using sound judgment within established guidelines; Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships within a team environment; Dealing tactfully and effectively with a variety of individuals, including patrons, library staff, and the general public; Operating standard office equipment, including a typewriter, photocopier, fax, word processor, and/or other computer equipment; and Keyboarding, word processing, or entering data at a speed and accuracy level necessary for successful job performance.Physical/Mental Abilities:

- Occasional typing, picking, pinching with either hand, simple and power grasping with either hand, pushing and pulling with either hand, reaching; fine manipulation with either hand; and repetitive use of hands; Special Requirements

- Must be able to concentrate, make decisions, work with the public, exercise sound judgment, handle stressful situations, and work alone; Environmental Conditions
- Occasional to frequent exposure to noise, occasional to moderate risk of exposure to hazardous materials (e.g., dirt, dust, gas, smoke, fumes, and poor ventilation), indoor cold/heat; and Working Conditions
- Must be able to work in an office environment, primarily quiet.
