Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking a Locums Psychiatrist for an adult inpatient psychiatric facility serving a male forensic population. New Grads accepted!!! The ideal candidate will have experience in inpatient and forensic psychiatry, including prior rotations in a forensic setting, and a strong passion for working with state psychiatric patients. Responsibilities include psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, and medication management for patients with complex conditions such as schizophrenia and substance use disorders (alcohol and opioids). Experience with forced medication protocols and familiarity with the civil commitment process, including documentation and legal considerations, is highly preferred. This role requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary team in a structured inpatient environment. Duties Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic assessments for patients across age groups, including pediatrics and geriatrics. Develop individualized treatment plans incorporating medication management and psychotherapy modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy. Provide crisis intervention and manage acute psychiatric episodes with effective crisis management strategies. Document all patient encounters accurately in medical records following HIPAA regulations and medical documentation standards. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care, including intake assessments and follow-up evaluations. Utilize telehealth platforms to deliver remote psychiatric services when applicable, ensuring seamless patient engagement. Monitor patient progress through ongoing data collection, adjusting treatment approaches as necessary for optimal outcomes. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic assessments for adult patients within a secure inpatient forensic psychiatric setting Develop and manage individualized treatment plans, including medication management for complex conditions such as schizophrenia and co-occurring substance use disorders (alcohol and opioids) Administer and monitor treatment interventions, including experience with forced medication protocols when clinically appropriate Participate in and support the civil commitment process, including preparing documentation and collaborating in legal proceedings Manage a consistent patient load within an admissions unit (approximately 17-18 patients per day, ~1 new admission per week) Provide stabilization and ongoing psychiatric care in a structured, high-acuity environment Accurately document patient encounters using paper charting and in-house E-Med systems for medication management Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including clinical staff, technicians, and security to ensure safe and effective patient care Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans to support stabilization and long-term outcomes Requirements Experience in inpatient psychiatry required; forensic or state hospital experience strongly preferred New graduates must have completed a clinical rotation in inpatient psychiatry or a correctional/forensic setting Strong understanding of forensic psychiatry and passion for working with state psychiatric populations Familiarity with civil commitment processes and related documentation preferred Active New Jersey license required for experienced providers (new grads exempt at time of interview) Board Eligible or General Practitioner accepted; board certification not required BLS certification preferred Ability to work independently in a structured, high-acuity, and secure environment
