Job Summary :
Provides direct and indirect care in the maternity setting. Communicates with physicians/charge nurses about changes in patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomology. Can respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, can perform general Nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Following Areas:
Ability, under direct supervision of an RN, to perform a head-to-toe physical review and reassessments of infants and adults as per policy. Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to policy and procedure. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition. Follows the five (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness. Implements a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning (family is included in teaching, as appropriate). Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the Plan of Care. Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in Nursery, Postpartum and appropriate Labor and Delivery areas. Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers and physicians. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family. Coordinates and supervises patient care under the direct supervision of an RN. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Documentation meets current standards and policies. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Professional Requirements:
Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual educational requirements. Maintains regulatory requirements. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time correctly. Completes annual in-services and returns in a timely fashion. Attends annual review and department in-services, as appropriate. Attends staff meetings, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Regulatory Requirements:
Current state Vocational Nurse Licensure. One (1) or more years of recent Labor and Delivery/Nursery experience preferred. Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification within one (1) year. BCLS and fetal monitoring certification.
Language Skills:
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.
