What You Will Do The Engineering Services - Fire Protection Engineering (ES-FPE) Group is the Laboratory's central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. ES-FPE is seeking Fire Protection Specialists to provide subject matter expertise in facility design & construction and facility operations & maintenance. Fire Protection and Life Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) Support
  • Provide technical support to laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations. Construction Project Support
  • Provide plan review and approval for construction projects. Lab-wide Fire Alarm System Operations and Maintenance
  • Oversee the operations and maintenance of the lab-wide fire alarm system. Fire Protection and Life Safety System Commissioning, Testing, and Maintenance
  • Oversee the commissioning, periodic testing, and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems Code Compliance and Regulatory Support
  • Develop equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes.
  • Provide technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.

What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience performing detailed technical reviews of facility design documents including designs, plans, submittals, project specifications and similar documents and provides effective, actionable comments.
  • Advanced experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnel.
  • Experience in design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features of building and of fire protection systems, or experience in documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes.
  • Proven leadership in teaching and mentoring more junior engineering staff.
Education/Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Active Q Clearance
  • Certification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Plans Examiner, and/or Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA or ICC)
  • Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected risks (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets, or AXA XL property risk guidelines
  • Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and nuclear facilities

The primary core tasks of the position may support functions and other applicable nuclear facility programs with formal qualification and certification of personnel performing work in Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP) facilities. The Technical Trainers will report directly to the Technical Training team First Line Manager. The selected individual will be responsible for establishing consistency within the instruction and evaluation of the Technical Training team. They will support all steps of the ADDIE process at a program level in addition to assisting with the knowledge capture and standardization of the team. This individual will assist with instruction of FMH/GBO courses as needed. The chosen candidate will have the responsibility and accountability to execute work that supports important training deliverables while setting the standards for utmost professional behavior and integrity in the workplace at all times. Salary Range:
$85,900 - $139,900 Job Duties for Learning Specialist 3:
  • Working with customers, stakeholders and regulators to assure training programs meet customer needs, regulatory drivers and contractual requirements.
  • Assisting with developing, implementing, and maintaining training documents and records, both physical and electronic.
  • Researching complex training and education issues and recommending sound, practical solutions.
  • Assisting with developing, implementing, and maintaining compliant and high-quality course materials such as live classroom, on-the-job and/or web-based training for diverse audiences.
  • Developing and/or conducting classroom training and OJT as assigned.
  • Using UTrain occasionally to design, build and implement training programs, as well as tracking completion of training assignments; using UTrain data to provide customized reporting that adds value to the business needs of the organization served.
Learning Specialist 4
Salary Range:
$114,700 - $191,200 In addition to the duties listed for Learning Specialist 3, candidates at the Learning Specialist 4 level will be:
  • Participating in assessments, incident investigations, root cause analyses, data analysis, project management, or critiques, as assigned.
  • Performing various administrative functions in conjunction with or in support of operational program compliance, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling of training activities.
  • Participating in knowledge preservation, capture, and transfer projects in support of learning deliverables as desired by the customer.

  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to assess, maintain, improve, and replace facility equipment.
  • Support the installation of new and replacement equipment including review of project design details, equipment data sheets, equipment selection, calculations, installation instructions / specifications, post-modification testing and commissioning procedures, etc. to satisfy the applicable design requirements.
