BASIC FUNCTIONS
Under general supervision, to maintain and make major and minor mechanical repairs to school buses and other automotive and mechanical equipment; and to do related work as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Acts as a liaison between assigned workers and other District personnel. 2. Inspects school buses, automobiles, trucks, and other mechanical equipment. 3. Diagnose mechanical troubles and determines extent of necessary repairs. 4. Overhauls and adjusts engines, transmissions, and clutches. 5. Tunes and reconditions engines. 6. Refaces, reseats and adjusts valves. 7. Cleans, repairs and replaces carburetors, fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks and gauges. 8. Rewires and repairs electrical systems. 9. Cleans or replaces spark plugs. 10. Repairs and replaces lights and switches. 11. Realigns and adjusts brakes. 12. Repairs water pumps and hoses. 13. Performs other shop work incidental to mechanical repairs. 14. Keeps records of time and materials used and work performed. 15. Provides training and instructs helpers as needed. 16. Recommends department procedures and policies. 17. Acts as an information source for workers regarding work methods, procedures, and problem solving. 18. Coordinates, assigns and guides the work of assigned workers. 19. Performs other related duties as assigned. 19. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS 1.
Knowledge of tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of automotive equipment and of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems. 2. Knowledge of operation and care of internal combustion engines. 3. Knowledge of safe work practices. 4. Ability to diagnose automotive and related mechanical equipment problems. 5. Ability to skillfully perform required mechanical repair to a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment. 6. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 7. One (1) year of journeyman level experience in the repair of automotive and other power-driven equipment. 8. Education equivalent to completion of the eighth grade, preferably including or supplemented by mechanical trade courses. 9. Ability to pass District physical examination. 10. Criminal Justice fingerprint/background check. 11. Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver License and Class B Driver License with passenger endorsement.
