Department:
The Automotive Mechanic I plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing the District's fleet of vehicles and equipment, ensuring safety and reliability. This position involves a variety of tasks, including the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of diesel-powered automotive equipment, as well as performing small engine, brake, and AC system repairs. In addition, the Automotive Mechanic is responsible for vehicle prep, cleaning, detailing, and record-keeping to ensure vehicles are in top condition for daily use. The role requires collaboration with internal departments to coordinate travel schedules, including field trips and special events. As a key member of the Merced College Transportation Department, the Automotive Mechanic contributes to maintaining a safe and efficient fleet of vehicles and equipment for staff and students. 12 months/year General Description:
Under general supervision, to perform skill-level work in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of the District's gasoline-powered and diesel-powered automotive and groundskeeping equipment. This includes light trucks, medium-duty vehicles, tractors, lifts, skid steers, riding mowers, and small engines. The role emphasizes preventative maintenance and ensures that all equipment operates efficiently and safely. Examples of Duties Representative Duties:
Performs mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of grounds equipment, automotive equipment including tractors, light trucks and riding mowers, two-cycle and four-cycle engines, and tire maintenance
Identifies and communicates recommendations regarding the extent and type of repairs needed for individual pieces of equipment to fellow mechanics
Repairs small engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, differentials, cooling systems, air conditioning systems, tunes engines, repairs electrical systems
Orders parts and accessories
Cares for and conducts preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment
Keep records of repair and maintenance work
Performs vehicle cleaning including waxing/buffing and detailing
Follows safe operation procedures to ensure a hazard-free working environment
Uses work order system to create and update status on repair orders
Performs other related duties as assigned Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of gasoline-powered automotive equipment
Principles and methods used in a program of preventative maintenance for automotive equipment
Safe driving practices
Work order system for tracking of repair orders Ability to: Estimate the cost of repairs
Order supplies and equipment
Use tools and equipment necessary in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment
Perform preventative maintenance
Keep records
To follow oral and written directions
Work cooperatively with others
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education/Training/Experience Graduation from high school or the equivalent AND
Two years of successful performance in automotive maintenance and repair.
License or Certificate:
Possess a Class C driver's license
Possess or acquire automotive air conditioning certification (ASE) within first six months of employment PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
