Summary:
Preservation Arts is seeking a Technician to support the outdoor sculpture conservation team and studio operations. The position includes assisting with outdoor sculpture treatments at least two days per week, including preparing equipment, packing for projects, driving the company van, assisting with on-site conservation under supervision, working on scaffolding, operating boom and scissor lifts, and handling conservation tools and equipment. Training will be provided. Studio responsibilities include artwork handling, packing and tracking collections, assisting with deliveries and installations, monitoring the anoxic pest management program, supporting facility operations, and assisting conservators with treatments and other projects as needed.
Responsibilities:
Support the outdoor conservation team with maintenance and treatment of outdoor sculpture. Prepare, pack and transport equipment and supplies for onsite work, including driving the company vehicles. Assist conservators with onsite sculpture treatments using solvents, hand and mechanical tools and a range of equipment, including ladders and scaffolds, as well as driving booms and scissor lifts. Work in a variety of locations, public and private collections, commercial environments, residences and museums. Work closely with the Senior Technician to ensure the safe handling, movement, storage and transportation of artwork in the studio and onsite. Handle, pack, load and secure a wide variety of artworks using museum best practices. With supervision, organize and maintain artwork storage areas, studio spaces, and conservation supplies. Assist with incoming and outgoing artwork deliveries and inventory tracking in collaboration with the Collections Team. Assist with artwork deliveries, installations, and deinstallations in museums, public spaces, commercial settings, and private residences. Assist with monitoring and maintaining the anoxic pest management program, including tracking, data recording, enclosure assembly, and routine inspections. Building enclosures, monitoring and other responsibilities as needed. Travel occasionally for conservation projects including overnight stays when required. Perform other studio, onsite and conservation support duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, Studio Arts, Design or similar field or commensurate work experience. At least 2 years' experience as a preparator or in a similar position in a museum, gallery or arts organization. Experience with art handling, deliveries, storage, packing, and installation of small artworks. Thorough knowledge of construction techniques, materials and tools. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time. Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools. Familiarity with the use of hand trucks, pallet jacks, j-bars, dollies and other moving equipment needed. Excellent communication skills with the ability to identify problems and resolve them quickly. Ability to manage multiple projects while establishing and meeting deadlines. Strong initiative and follow-through skills, and an ability to operate independently as well as in a team setting. Creative and flexible problem-solving skills. Sound judgment and professional presence. Clean driving record and ability to drive a Sprinter Van.
Working Conditions:
Applicants must be comfortable with working in a team environment or independently. Must possess a valid driver's license and be willing to travel and work occasional overtime as needed.
General Time Commitment:
This position is full-time, 4 or 5 days per week with benefits.
Physical Demands:
This position involves frequent travel between project sites and requires working in a variety of locations throughout the region. It requires an ability to stand, walk, move and remain active consistently and for lengthy periods in varying temperatures, and the ability to lift 50 pounds and perform routine bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Compensation and Benefits:
The wage range for this position is $31.49-$33.41 per hour. Preservation Arts offers 100% healthcare and dental coverage for employees, optional Vision, and a health and dependent care FSA. Employees are eligible to enroll in the company's 401(k) plan after 6 months of employment with an automatic 3% company contribution and additional profit sharing and pension contributions.
