Job Summary Starting Salary:
Heavy Equipment Technician I:
$21.10

Heavy Equipment Technician II:
$22.62
  • 35.

FIRST SHIFT
6:00 am to 2:30 pm
SECOND SHIFT
1:00 PM to 9:30 PM Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems; inspecting, replacing and/or repairing defective parts, and performing preventative maintenance on City automobiles, tractors, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, fire trucks and equipment, police cars and/or motorcycles and small engines. This position assigns, oversees work and trains lower lever mechanics as needed. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.
Minimum Qualifications:
Heavy Equipment Technician I:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and two (2) years' experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic, or accreditation from a vocational institute; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess two (2) ASE T-series certifications, or one (1) ASE T-series passing exam score and one (1) EVT passing exam score; or pass (1) internally administered practical exam in related field within 6 months of employment. May be required to obtain a valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes at the discretion of the department. Additional criteria for
Probationary Success:
To successfully complete the six-month probationary period, technicians must demonstrate both practical and theoretical proficiency. New hires can satisfy this requirement by completing one of the following two pathways: Option 1: Practical Vehicle Safety Inspection AND Diagnostic & Repair Exam (administered internally to City of Orlando Employees) Option 2: Certified (1) EVT Certification OR (1) ASE T-Series Certification (2) ASE T-Series Certifications OR (2)
EVT Certifications NOTE:
(ASE T-series practice exams/books are available after successful employment)
Heavy Equipment Technician II:
High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate and four (4) years experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess least two (2) ASE T-series certifications and two (2) EVT certifications in a related field, or any combination of four (4) ASE T-series and/or EVT certifications in a related field. May be required to obtain valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes at the discretion of the department.
