Job Description

The City of Galesburg seeks interested applicants to fill one (1) position in the Mechanic classification. This is a permanent, overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position with a starting hourly pay rate of $28.75 (Step A). The pay range for this position is $28.75

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Responsible for the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of municipal vehicles.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs skilled repair and maintenance on City vehicles, equipment, and fire apparatus, including law enforcement vehicles, heavy-duty and light-duty dump trucks, pickup trucks, administration vehicles, end loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks, vac trucks, graders, rollers, mowers, landscaping maintenance equipment, off-site generators, brush chippers, trailers, towed equipment, and others. Repairs, rebuilds, and replaces small and large engines, power train components, hydraulic components on end loaders and backhoes, steering components, brake shoes, brake discs, and ABS, hydraulic cylinders, air brake chambers and valves, carburetors, electronic ignition components, alternators, starters, generators, electronic fuel injection, etc. Performs major and minor engine, electrical, and exhaust system repairs. Performs complex technical diagnoses to fuel delivery systems, direct ignition systems, ABS, SRS, heating and air conditioning systems, lighting, and emission controls for gas and diesel engines. Ability to comprehend electrical schematics and locate and repair circuitry. Repairs and maintains various small tools and equipment in support of field operations for the City. Performs vehicle and equipment preventative maintenance inspections and duties such as oil changes, fluids, tune-ups, brake replacements, belt replacements, tire changes and repairs, steering, suspension, and hydraulic-operated systems. Performs engine tune-ups and maintenance on vehicles and equipment requiring the use of diagnostic scanners, lab scope, and KV monitors, and exhaust gas analyzers. Uses welding and brazing equipment and torches, and plasma cutters to fabricate new or repair old equipment. Installs equipment for seasonal use, such as snow plow frames, plows, salt spreaders, sidewalk equipment, snow tires, and other snow removal equipment. Installs added electrical and safety systems on new vehicles, including trailer brake controllers, warning lights and controllers, two-way radios and chargers, accessory power outlets, and reverse cameras and monitors. Keeps records of jobs and the time required to complete them, inventories parts, and prepares repair orders. Answers emergency towing calls for the repair of City vehicles. On 24-hour calls. Other duties as assigned, such as snow and ice operations.

CFA EDUCATION
High school diploma required. Associate's degree in Auto and/or Diesel Technology; and, three years' experience in complex diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment; or, Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Requires three years' experience in automotive mechanics. Requires extensive knowledge of the standard methods, procedures, techniques, tools, and equipment used in garage shops and body repair. Requires extensive knowledge of a broad range of vehicles and power equipment, materials, and parts. Requires working knowledge of light and heavy equipment hydraulics. Requires working knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable precautionary measures.
PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITY
Requires the ability to understand and carry out work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints as well as the supervisor's instructions. Requires the ability to estimate the cost of repair and rebuilding parts and/or labor and to compute and compile simple records and reports. Requires skill in the use, operation, and care of tools, machines, and equipment employed in motor repair and adjustment. Requires the capability of acquiring a valid Commercial Drivers License (class B with air brake endorsement) within six months of hire date. Ability to perform heavy to very heavy manual work and heavy lifting. Requires the ability to furnish one's own mechanical hand tools.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Bending, twisting, squatting, crouching, and kneeling. Ability to hear, tell where a sound is coming from, and differentiate between sounds.
