TITLE:
Mechanic
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent Ability to read and write Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers Ability to work with other people and be willing to be flexible in task assignment Have a general working knowledge of gas, diesel and compressed natural gas powered commercial vehicles Obtain or hold a valid Commercial Driver License, Class B, with "S" & "P" Endorsement (If you do not currently hold a CDL or are missing the appropriate endorsement, training can be provided to you upon hire) Must be able to pass a physical examination by a licensed physician
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Possess ASE Diesel certification and/or equivalent schooling Mechanical experience on medium or heavy duty trucks and/or school Certified and/or general electronic training Commercial (Diesel / Unleaded / Compressed Natural Gas) Engine experience Ability to perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. JOB GOAL
The job of Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of providing mechanical services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs; performing repairs and preventive maintenance; ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; providing information on the proper uses of equipment; and utilizing existing technology effectively in the performance of duties, and performs other related work as required. Maintain district vehicles and equipment at the highest standards of operating excellence to support educational programming. Drive a daily bus route or dispatch as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements. Inspects assigned vehicles (brake system, steering systems, operating systems, fluid levels, heating and cooling systems, tire pressure, hydraulics, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition. Maintain accurate and current records of repairs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc. for the purpose of documenting required information and meeting regulatory requirements. Maintain tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, cleanliness and safety within the workspace. Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, fenders, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles. Performs routine vehicle maintenance program (e.g. oil change, tire rotation, break check, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements. Repairs vehicle systems and components, etc. (e.g. diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulics, heating and cooling systems, differentials, clutches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition. Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles and or accidents for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field. Assists with snow / ice removal on and or around buses and other assigned areas for the purpose of ensuring buses can maintain established schedules and work objectives can be completed. Attends necessary in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. Meets requirements/qualifications for a bus driver and will drive a route as needed.

Maintains open communication with district staff necessary for safe operations.
REASONING ABILITY
Required to perform technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet ever-changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating school buses and/or district vehicles; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include methods of maintaining vehicles; methods of storage and removal of hazardous materials; and safety practices and procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling frequent climbing and balancing frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% standing, 20% walking, and 20% sitting. The job is performed under extreme temperature variations.
