Job Summary The Automotive Lead Mechanic/Shop Manager is primarily responsible for performing advanced vehicle diagnostics, repairs, and technical oversight while supporting the day-to-day management of the automotive repair shop. This position serves as the shop's lead technician, ensuring repairs are completed accurately, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. In addition to hands-on mechanical responsibilities, the role assists with shop scheduling, workflow coordination, technician support, inventory management, and customer communication. Key Responsibilities Lead Mechanic & Technical Oversight Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and systems. Serve as the lead technician and technical resource for all shop personnel. Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, drivability, and performance issues. Perform repairs, maintenance services, and quality control inspections as needed. Review repair orders and verify accurate diagnoses before repairs are completed. Ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and company quality expectations. Assist technicians with troubleshooting and provide technical guidance and mentorship. Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and repair procedures. Team Leadership Provide leadership, direction, and support to technicians and shop staff. Promote quality workmanship, accountability, and continuous improvement. Assist with training, mentoring, and onboarding new technicians. Foster a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment. Help establish and maintain performance and productivity standards. Shop Operations & Management Assist in overseeing daily shop operations to ensure efficiency, productivity, and safety. Coordinate and prioritize repair schedules to maximize workflow and meet customer expectations. Monitor job progress and ensure repairs are completed on time and within scope. Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and compliance with safety regulations. Manage inventory levels and coordinate ordering of parts, tools, equipment, and shop supplies. Work with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely procurement of necessary materials. Support technician productivity through effective task assignment and workflow management. Customer Service & Administrative Support Communicate with customers regarding vehicle concerns, repair recommendations, and service updates. Explain diagnostic findings and repair options in a clear and professional manner. Assist in preparing estimates for parts, labor, and repair timelines. Support the preparation and maintenance of repair orders, invoices, and service records. Address customer questions and concerns while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction. Process invoices and payments using ShopBoss or other shop management software as needed. Ensure accurate documentation of all repairs and services performed. Qualifications Minimum 5 years of hands-on automotive repair and diagnostic experience. Strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic troubleshooting skills. Proven ability to diagnose and repair a wide range of vehicle systems. Leadership experience as a Lead Mechanic, Master Technician, Shop Foreman, or similar role preferred. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with diagnostic equipment, repair information systems, and shop management software. Valid driver's license required. Preferred Qualifications ASE Master Technician Certification or equivalent automotive certifications. Experience supervising technicians and coordinating shop workflow. Experience with ShopBoss or similar automotive shop management software. CDL License or heavy-duty equipment experience is a plus.
