Job Description
SUMMARY•This is a skilled maintenance position whose principal function is to ensure that assigned gasoline and diesel fueled automobiles, trucks and special equipment are kept in safe and operable condition. This work is accomplished by performing routine service, diagnosing problems as they arise and properly and efficiently performing needed maintenance and necessary repairs. This position also maintains detailed records on maintenance and repair work completed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires the employee to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, outside contractors and the public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs complete routine service of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks and special equipment including, but not limited to oil changes, chassis lubrication, tune-ups, replacement of engine filters and belts. Performs complete maintenance and repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks and special equipment including, but not limited to, engine overhauls, transmission repair, electrical system diagnostics, heating and air conditioning systems, body work, brake and frame maintenance, suspension and steering systems, hydraulics, and related equipment. Inspects, tests and repairs vehicle electrical charging systems such as alternators, regulators and batteries. Installs and repairs accessories such as headlights, brake and signal lights, windshield wipers, heaters, emergency lights and mirrors. Installs special equipment in police vehicles such as sirens, striping and lights. Completes a schedule of preventative maintenance to include testing equipment to ensure readiness for use. Performs service calls for inoperative vehicles as needed. Discusses vehicle problems with operators in order to identify nature and extent of damage or malfunction and explain what work may be required. Identifies problems and diagnoses basic mechanical problems and repairs or replaces defective parts; Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Maintains accurate records on problem diagnosis and maintenance and repair work performed including time, parts, supplies and equipment utilized Willingly and cooperatively accepts other duties and responsibilities as assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

•The minimum eligibility requirements for this position are as follows: EDUCATION and/orEXPERIENCE
•Possession of a high school diploma or GED Certificate and two years of full-time employment in automotive repair and maintenance and/or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the essential requirements of work.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
•Must possess, or have the ability to obtain within 6 (six) months of hire, a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes endorsement or a comparable driver's license issued by the employee's state of residence, and a proven safe driving record. Must possess or have the ability to obtain Automotive Service Excellence Certifications in various automotive disciplines.
